BGSU Begins a Busy Non-Conference Stretch with Trip to MSU

• The BGSU softball team begins a busy portion of the schedule this week. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons are set to play nine games in a seven-day span.
• That stretch starts with a three-game series against Morehead State. The Falcons and Eagles will play a Wednesday (March 6) single game and a Thursday (March 7) doubleheader at University Field in Morehead, Ky. The first two games of the series will be streamed on ESPN+.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to Highland Heights, Ky., for this weekend's NKU Spring Classic at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field. The Falcons will play back-to-back Saturday (March 9) games, facing Michigan at 10:00 a.m., before turning around and meeting Illinois State in a 12:30 p.m. start.
• On Sunday (March 10), the Falcons again face U-M at 10:00 a.m., then meet host Northern Kentucky in a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
• Next Tuesday (March 12) will see BGSU venture to South Bend, Ind., for a doubleheader vs. Notre Dame. Game one of the twinbill is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Melissa Cook Stadium.
• The Falcons began the 2024 campaign by going 1-3 at the Battle at the Beach (Feb. 24-25), hosted by Coastal Carolina. BGSU split a pair of games with Furman, including a 7-3 win in the Falcons' season opener, and also faced Louisville and CCU.
• Last weekend (March 1-3), BG dropped four games at the Hoosier Classic, facing Valparaiso and host Indiana.
• A total of 21 different players have seen action this season to date, including eight of the nine newcomers who are eligible to play (one of BGSU's 10 newcomers will redshirt the 2024 season).
• Senior Reagan Williamson is hitting a team-leading .458 on the season, and has at least one hit in all eight of the Falcons' games. She homered in back-to-back games, and both were two-run round-trippers against Valpo. Williamson leads the Falcons in hits (11), extra-base hits (four), RBI (eight), total bases (19) and slugging percentage (.792).
• Freshman Cameron Kaufman and senior Peyton Dolejs are hitting .353 and .300, respectively. Dolejs, the only Falcon other than Williamson to start all eight games, is second on the team with seven RBI. Lexi Carver is hitting .267 and leads the team in walks (five) and on-base percentage (.500).
• In the circle, five different Falcons have seen action this season. Taylor Turner, a transfer from Miami University, leads the Orange and Brown in nearly every category. She is 1-3 with a 4.97 ERA and an opponent batting average of just .237. Turner has had three complete games in her four starts.
• Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries are joined by 14 returning letterwinners from last year's club. That list includes Dolejs and Williamson, each of whom have started over 100 career games.
• Williamson and Dolejs hit .246 and .245, respectively, in 2023, to pace the returnees. Dolejs has a career batting average of .281, and leads active Falcons with career totals of 406 at-bats, 71 runs scored, 114 hits, 31 extra-base hits and 58 runs batted in.
• Williamson paces BGSU's returning players in career walks (53) and homers (11), and has 326 career-at-bats, 91 hits and 57 RBI as a Falcon.
• Dolejs is the lone returning Falcon who played in all 50 games last season, making 49 starts. A total of five other returning players started at least 34 games in 2023, including Williamson, Hannah Hunt, Wynnie Reid, Makailah Dees and Delaney Davis.
• Morehead State enters the midweek series with a 4-6 record on the season, having participated in tournaments hosted by Presbyterian and Mercer. Darlene Montoya is hitting a team-leading .394, while Sela Pickford is batting .324 this year to date. Addie Stem and Jessie Begley each have pitched in nine games, each have made five starts and each have two wins for head coach Megan Griffith's club. Last season, the Eagles went 11-33 overall and 6-18 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
• Michigan is 11-9 heading into Saturday's BGSU game. The Wolverines are coming off of a run-rule win over #13 Florida. Maddie Erickson is hitting a team-high .351, while Indiana Langford is batting .293. In the circle, three pitchers have appeared in at least 10 games, with Lauren Derkowski leading the team in wins (four), innings pitched (51 1/3) and ERA (1.64). Last season, head coach Bonnie Tholl's team went 26-25 overall and 10-13 in Big Ten Conference play.
• Illinois State will take a 5-16 record into a Friday doubleheader at Northern Kentucky. The Redbirds went 3-2 at the SIUE Cougar Invite over the weekend, with one of the losses coming despite a no-hitter by Paige McLeod. Delainey Bryan is batting .309 on the year, while McLeod is 2-2 with a team-leading 2.74 ERA. Last season, head coach Tina Kramos and the Redbirds finished 30-22 overall, going 19-7 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
• Northern Kentucky is 5-8 on the year, heading into Friday's Illinois State DH. The Norse dropped two of three closely-contested games to Charleston Southern in a weekend series. Entering the final game of that series, Ella LeMonier and Trinity Robertson were batting .405 and .361, respectively. In the circle, Madisyn Eads is 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA on the young season. Head coach Kathryn Gleason and the Norse went 23-32 overall and 13-9 in Horizon League play last season. NKU won the HL Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2023.
• Notre Dame is 8-8 in 2024, and the Fighting Irish will participate in this weekend's Marshall March Madness tourney in Huntington, W.Va., before hosting the Falcons on Tuesday. Emily Tran and Karina Gaskins are batting .486 and .412, respectively, as six regulars are hitting at least .300 on the season. In the circle, Shannon Becker leads the team with a 3.62 ERA, while with Micaela Kastor and Alexis Laudenslager each owning four victories. Last season, head coach Deanna Gumpf's squad went 30-19-1 overall and 11-12-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
• The Falcons lead Morehead State, 7-1-1, in the all-time series. The teams' last meeting came two years ago, and resulted in a 5-2 BG win (March 6, 2022) in a tournament in Evansville, Ind.
• BGSU trails Michigan, 33-4, in that series. The Wolverines picked up a 9-0 victory over the Falcons in Ann Arbor last season (March 15, 2023).
• BGSU and Illinois State are tied, 3-3, in that series, and the teams have not met in over two decades. The last meeting saw BG win, 2-0 in eight innings, on March 8, 2003, in Louisville, Ky.
• The Falcons and Northern Kentucky have never met on the softball diamond.
