BGSU batters draw 10 walks in the two games
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a pair of contests at Morehead State University on Thursday (March 7). The Eagles picked up wins by scores of 3-2 and 5-2 at University Field. The second game was halted after six innings due to darkness.
In the opener, Scarlet Anderson allowed just two hits in a complete-game effort for the Falcons (1-9), but a pair of pitchers combined to surrender just one hit for the Eagles (6-6).
Anderson walked two batters and struck out three in her six innings of work.
The nightcap saw the hosts score twice in the first inning before adding a run in the third. Back-to-back doubles by Peyton Dolejs and Marti Henkel gave the Falcons a run in the fourth, but the Eagles got a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to maintain control.
Henkel had a hit in each game, with a single in the opener and the RBI double in the nightcap. Addie Martin walked twice and scored a run in game one, then picked up her first collegiate hit in game two, and Reagan Williamson walked in each game as BG batters drew 10 walks in the doubleheader.
BGSU-MSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had at least one baserunner in each of the first four innings of the opener. Reagan Williamson drew a four-pitch walk with two outs in the first inning, and Lexi Carver also walked to lead off the second.
• After Carver's base on balls, pinch-runner Delaney Davis moved up on a wild pitch, and Katie Hutter reached base on a bunt as the Eagles threw late to third in an attempt to get Davis. Hutter stole second, but a fly ball to shallow right resulted in a double play on an out at the plate.
• The home team got on the board in the bottom of the second. Darlene Montoya singled and stole second, and a pair of walks loaded the bases before a fielder's choice scored a run. Then, the Eagles scored a second run on a rundown and a third on another ground ball.
• BGSU got a pair of runs back in the top of the third inning. Addie Martin led off with a walk and promptly stole second. Peyton Steffes laid down a bunt, and both runners were safe when the throw to third was late.
• Steffes stole second, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch, with Martin crossing the plate. Wynnie Reid drew a walk, and although she was caught stealing, Steffes scored on the play to make it a 3-2 game.
• BGSU looked to mount a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Marti Henkel singled, and Martin and Steffes each walked to load the bases. Reid followed with a sinking liner to center, but was robbed as the MSU centerfielder came charging in to make a diving catch for the third out.
• Williamson was similarly robbed as she led off the Falcon fifth with a drive down the right-field line, only to see an Eagle outfielder make a diving catch. Beginning with the Reid liner that ended the fourth, MSU pitchers combined to retire 10 Falcons in a row to end the game.
• Scarlet Anderson allowed just two hits in her complete-game effort in the circle.
BGSU-MSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Game two saw the hosts take an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Kendra Lewis led off with a bunt single, and a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Ilencia Lightbody and Samantha Cervantes had run-scoring singles for the Eagles.
• BG put a pair of runners on base in the second inning, when Carver reached on an error and Aaralyn Nogay drew a walk. In the third, Kaylee Cole singled and Reagan Williamson walked. But, in each case, the hosts kept BG off of the scoreboard.
• The Falcons broke through in the fourth after two runners were retired. Peyton Dolejs and Henkel had back-to-back doubles to left-center, with Dolejs scoring on the latter play.
• But, the Eagles answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, as a two-out Peyton Jordan single plated a pair of teammates.
• BGSU got a run back in the fifth. Taylor Behrendt walked with one out, and a two-out error put Cameron Kaufman on base, with Behrendt taking second. Then, Carver came through with an RBI single. After a pitching change, Anderson pinch-hit and drew a walk, but a grounder to short ended the threat.
• Emma Denison made her Falcon debut in the bottom of the fifth and worked a scoreless inning. Martin singled with one out in the sixth and advanced as far as second before a groundout ended the inning, and the contest was then ended due to darkness.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons are scheduled to head to Highland Heights, Ky., for four games in the NKU Spring Classic on Saturday and Sunday (March 9-10). The Falcons currently are scheduled face Michigan twice in that tournament, also meeting Illinois State and host Northern Kentucky once each. (Note that the schedule may change due to the weekend weather forecast.)
