Brook Simpson Joins Falcon Family
May 16, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Fred Chmiel has announced the signing of Brook Simpson (Saugatuck, Mich.) to a National Letter of Intent. Simpson will join the Falcon family for the 2024-25 academic year.
Simpson, a multiple-year all-state selection in high school, will be a freshman at BGSU in the fall of 2024.
"We are extremely pleased to have Brook join our program," said Chmiel. "She is a high-character individual who will bring more than just her basketball talents to BG. Brook is a versatile guard with great athleticism and a championship mentality."
Simpson, a 5-11 guard, earned Associated Press All-Michigan Second-Team honors in Division 3 as a senior at Saugatuck, where she averaged 17.5 points, three rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.7 steals for coach Kevin Tringali's team. The Trailblazers won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SAC) Central Division title, advanced to the district finals and finished the season with a 22-2 record. Simpson was named the Holland Sentinel Defensive Player of the Year in 2023-24
Simpson played her senior season at Saugatuck after transferring from Belding H.S. Prior to transferring, she missed over a year due to an injury suffered in June of 2022. She saw her freshman season cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After playing her sophomore season at Belding, she missed her entire junior season due to injury. Still, she finished with more than 1,000 career points.
In that sophomore season, Simpson scored a school-record 48 points in a Belding win, breaking a single-game record that had stood for over three decades. She earned All-Michigan First-Team honors after averaging 26 points, seven rebounds and 4.2 steals that season.
A track and field standout as well, Simpson won the Division 2 state championship in the high jump as a freshman at Belding, setting a new state record with a jump of 5-10. She finished as the state runner up in both the 200 and 400 that spring.
Simpson brings the total of 2024-25 newcomers to six, as she joins Johnea Donahue (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Lauren Gerken (Findlay, Ohio), Laila Harrison (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kristiana Kulackovska (Saldus, Latvia) and Kendal Moxey (Centreville, Md.).
