Falcons To Face Three 2023 NCAA Tournament Participants At Tru By Hilton Beavercreek Invite

BGVB Set For First Road Trip Of 2024 Against UMBC, No. 22 Dayton, Wright State
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will hit the road this weekend for the first time during the 2024 season. BGSU will be competing in the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invite, hosted by Wright State. In addition to the host Raiders, the Falcons will be taking on UMBC and No. 22 Dayton. All three of Bowling Green's weekend opponents earned bids in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, including Dayton advancing to the second round. All three of BGSU's matches are set for 3 p.m. first serves.

First Serve
Scouting UMBC
UMBC is coming off the Stacey Clark Classic at Purdue last weekend. The Retrievers began against UC Davis, falling in a 3-1 final. Their weekend continued with #8 Purdue on Saturday (Aug. 31) and RV Kansas State on Sunday (Sept. 1), coming out on the losing end of 3-0 finals to both. Last year, UMBC went 17-8 on the season, including an 8-2 record in AEC play. The Retrievers topped Bryant and Binghamton in the America East Championships, both sweeps, to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, they fell to USC in three sets.
Scouting No. 22 Dayton
Dayton enters the weekend ranked No. 22 in the nation in the AVCA rankings, holding a 2-0 record after wins over Northern Iowa and Florida International at home last weekend. The Flyers topped UNI in five sets and FIU in three. They were scheduled to play Ohio State, but the match was deemed a no contest due to court conditions from humidity. Last year, Dayton went 32-3, including an 18-0 conference record, on their way to an A-10 title and NCAA Tournament appearance. They beat Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAAs, 3-2, before falling to Washington State, 3-1.
Scouting Wright State
Wright State, the host for the weekend, comes in with a 3-0 record after a weekend in Athens, Ohio. The Raiders beat Appalachian State, Xavier and Ohio over the first weekend, all by 3-0 sweeps. As for last season, Wright State posted a 21-11 record on the year while being 15-3 within the Horizon League. Their schedule included a trip to the Stroh Center with BGSU taking the match in a 3-1 final. The Raiders' season resulted in a Horizon title, sweeping their way through the conference tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, the Raiders came up short against Louisville, 3-1.
Hovey Moves Up Rally Scoring List
During the Best Western Invitational last weekend, junior opposite hitter Lauryn Hovey landed five aces over three matches for Bowling Green. The performance pushed Hovey's career aces total to 90, tying her for seventh on the program's Rally Scoring Era record list. Hovey needs to reach 94 aces for the next step, which would be tying Madeline Garda for sixth. As for the overall program records, Hovey needs 107 career aces to tie Julia Walz for 10th.
Mettille Making Moves
Fifth year middle blocker Alexis Mettille registered 11 total blocks over the course of the Best Western Invitational for the Falcons. The outing placed Mettille on the program's Rally Scoring Era top 10 for career total blocks. Over her five seasons, Mettille now has 233 blocks, placing her 10th on the list. She is also currently 10th for career block assists with 204 and one solo block away, currently with 29, from breaking into the Top 10 for that stat as well. For solo blocks, junior middle blocker Jessica Andrews is right behind Mettille with 28 career solo blocks herself.
New Arrivals Make Early Impact
During the Best Western Invitational, the Falcons had six Falcons see the court for the first time in the Orange and Brown, five being new arrivals this season. Edyta Waclawczyk played for the first time after redshirting last season. As for new arrivals, Sydnie Hernandez, Avery Anders, Paige Parlanti, Anna Sitek and Jordan Newblatt all took the court for BGSU for the first time. Newblatt logged 13 kills, 11 digs and four aces over the weekend while Hernandez added nine digs and Sitek tallied 14 assists. Parlanti landed a kill for BGSU and Anders was perfect on three serve receive attempts.

First Serve
- All three of Bowling Green's opponents at the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invite went to the 2023 NCAA Tournament. UMBC and Wright State both made the tournament while Dayton advanced to the second round, topping Pepperdine in the first round over five sets. UMBC lost to USC, 3-0, in the first round and Wright State fell to Louisville, 3-1.
- The Falcons have played against Wright State as recently as last season and 31 times in program history, however, this will be BGSU's first trip to C.J. McLin Gymnasium since the 2014 season, picking up a 3-2 win in the last trip. Since then, BGSU and Wright State have played twice in Bowling Green (2015, 2023) and once at a neutral site (2019, Notre Dame).
- Dayton enters the weekend ranked as the No. 22 team in the nation according to the AVCA rankings. The Flyers will be the first ranked opponent for Bowling Green since taking on No. 14 Baylor last season at the Colorado State Tournament on Sept. 9. BGSU went four sets with Baylor, coming up short in the 3-1 final.
