Despite Fleming's 23-Point Effort, Falcons Fall in Oxford
January 11, 2025 | Women's Basketball
Miami picks up a 78-63 win Saturday afternoon
OXFORD, Ohio – Lexi Fleming had 23 points and six assists on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11), but the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team suffered a 78-63 loss to Miami University at Millett Hall.
Paige Kohler and Amy Velasco joined Fleming in double digits for the Falcons (7-8, 1-3 Mid-American Conference). Kohler had 12 points, with Velasco scoring 11 on the afternoon.
Maya Chandler had 25 points for the RedHawks (9-5, 2-2 MAC), going 8-of-9 from the field, while both Amber Tretter and Enjulina Gonzalez scored 17 points.
The Falcons shot 60 percent in the fourth quarter, going 9-of-15 from the floor in the final 10 minutes. Trailing by 17 points after 30 minutes, the Orange and Brown went on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to single digits. Fleming fed Velasco for a three-pointer, then scored the next three BG buckets herself. The last shot in that stretch, a pull-up jumper, made it a 59-50 game with seven-and-a-half minutes to go.
But, the RedHawks countered with three-pointers by Chandler and Gonzalez to extend the lead back out to 15 points midway through the period.
Fleming was directly involved in the scoring of seven of BGSU's nine fourth-quarter field goals, scoring three and assisting on four.
FIRST QUARTER
• Lexi Fleming scored all nine of the Falcons' first-quarter points on Saturday. She opened the game's scoring with a steal and jumper just over a minute into the game.
• But, the RedHawks proceeded to score the next seven points, capped by an Amber Tretter three-point play with 6:24 left in the opening period.
• Fleming was fouled on a drive and knocked down two free-throw tries, but Maya Chandler answered with a three-pointer. After two more Fleming tosses, Chandler hit a right-side jumper. Fleming took a Johnea Donahue pass and hit a trailing three, but Enjulina Gonzalez responded with a triple of her own, and Katey Richason converted a turnaround shot to give the RedHawks a 17-9 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Emily Siesel rebounded a BGSU missed shot and flipped the ball to Jasmine Fearne for a three-pointer early in the second quarter, but Tamar Singer drove and scored before Tretter knocked down a triple try that gave the hosts a 24-12 lead.
• The Falcons responded with a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Paige Kohler took a Velasco pass and hit a long-distance shot, and a Velasco deflection gave the ball back to the Falcons, with Kohler finding Fleming for a transition three that cut the Miami lead to 24-18.
• But, the RedHawks responded with the next six points, as a Richason layup made it a 12-point game. Velasco scored six-straight points, with a shot off glass resulting in a three-point play, then a long-range make off of Fleming's kick-out.
• BG was within six once again, but the RedHawks again responded with a 6-0 run. Velasco stopped that run with a left-side jumper, but a Chandler jumper gave the hosts a 40-26 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
* Fleming hit a pull-up jumper, and Erika Porter converted a three-point play in the first two minutes of the second half. Down by 13 points, BGSU got a steal and layup from Donahue, who then fed Fleming for a three-pointer that cut the MU lead to 44-36.
• The RedHawks got a layup fro Tretter, but Donahue hit a long two-pointer. Singer, however, knocked down a three-point try with the shot clock winding town, and layups by Tretter and Gonzalez gave the hosts a 53-38 lead.
• That lead reached 17 points when Chandler hit a corner three in the final minute of the period.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Velasco began the fourth-quarter scoring, taking a Fleming pass and hitting a shot from the arc. Then, Velasco returned the favor, with a bounce pass that found a cutting Fleming for a baseline floater.
• Taya Ellis blocked a Miami shot, grabbing the rebound, and Kohler spotted Fleming for a layup. Then, Kohler rebounded a Miami miss, and the soph found Fleming for a pull-up jumper that cut the RedHawks' lead to 59-50.
• But, the hosts answered with a Chandler three-pointer, and after BG turned the ball back over, Gonzalez made a long-distance shot of her own, for a 65-50 MU lead.
• Donahue hit a three-pointer, but the RedHawks used most of the shot clock before Gonzalez knocked down a three-ball for a 68-53 lead. Kohler hit a pair of three-pointers down the stretch, but the Falcons could not cut into the deficit in the final few minutes.
