Falcons, RedHawks Play to 1-1 Draw at Cochrane
October 12, 2025 | Women's Soccer
BGSU is unbeaten in the last 12 matches, a new school record
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Emme Butera's 82nd-minute goal lifted the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Miami University on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12), in Mid-American Conference action at Cochrane Stadium.
The Falcons (7-1-6, 2-0-5 MAC) are now unbeaten in the last 12 matches, a new school record.
The RedHawks (7-5-1, 4-2-1 MAC) had taken the lead with 8:50 remaining in the opening half on a goal by Morhea Hoefen. But, after a handball foul was called in the box when an MU player blocked a shot by Ella Kane, Butera's penalty kick knotted the score with 8:40 to go in the second half.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons are now 6-0-6 in the last 12 matches, since BGSU's lone loss of the season (1-0 vs. Illinois on Aug. 17). BG's current unbeaten streak is the longest in school history.
• The 2005 team held the old record, having put together an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2). The '05 club's streak began on Oct. 2 and did not come to an end until an NCAA Championships first-round match on Nov. 11.Â
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons are now 7-1-6 (.714) on the season, continuing the best start in program history. The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first half of Sunday's match featured a total of just seven shots, and there was only one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. That shot, however, gave the RedHawks the lead at the intermission.
• With just under nine minutes to go before halftime, Miami's Shae Taylor stole the ball just outside the 18-yard box on the left side. Taylor took the ball into the penalty area and chipped a cross toward the far post. Morhea Hoefen was there to nod the ball home and give the visitors the lead.
• While Miami was on the front foot for much of the opening half, the Falcons had the better of the play for nearly all of the final 45 minutes. Six minutes into the period, MInah Syam took a pass from Emme Butera, and Syam in turn slid the ball ahead to Ella Kane, who was heading into the penalty area. Kane cut across the box and fired a shot that was deflected over the end line for a corner kick.
• Just over a minute later, after that corner was knocked out of play for another corner, Butera played that ball into the box. Ellie Pool got on the end of it near the far post. Pool's shot was blocked by a Miami defender, and BGSU's appeals for a handball on the play were not heard.
• Ten minutes into the half, Kane drove down the right side, avoided a challenge, and found Audrey Oliver at the top of the box. Oliver took a touch and hit a shot that went just wide left.
• Only three minutes after that, Butera made a nifty move near midfield to avoid a MIami defender, and played a diagonal ball into the box. The ball was curving toward the right side of the goal, and Pool just missed getting a touch as Dominique Popa was then able to grab the ball.
• Midway through the period, with the ball in BG's defensive end, Miami's Millie Cook pounced on a heavy touch and fired a one-time shot from approximately 12 yards out, but the shot was blocked by Gabby Lamparty.
• Under 18 minutes remained when Quinn O'Neil got on the end of a long free kick by Butera, but the freshman's header went over the bar and landed on the top netting. O'Neil had drawn the foul leading to the free kick as she blew past several MU players before being taken down by a clumsy challenge that led to a yellow card.
• With 11:30 to go, BG worked the ball through a host of MU defenders. Emily Hollar took a pass from Syam and threaded a pass to the onrushing Kane. Kane's shot from the top of the box, however, went just wide of the right post.
• BGSU was buzzing, and the Falcons quickly returned to the MU end of the field. Emma Stransky's pass from near the top of the box found Syam, who hit a shot from the semicircle just outside the 18, but it was parried by Popa, who then grabbed the rebound.
• BGSU almost immediately stole the ball back, and Isabella Mazzaferro found Kane with a centering pass. Kane cut back to avoid a defender and hit a hard shot from the top of the box. The screamer was blocked by a RedHawk defender, but a penalty kick was awarded as it was ruled the shot had hit the Miami player's arm. Butera stepped up and converted the PK, getting Popa to dive the wrong way while putting the ball just inside the post.
• That goal came with 8:39 to go, and just over two minutes later, the Falcons nearly took the lead. A long pass by Stransky put Kane behind the Miami defense, and Kane fought off challenges from both defender Juliann Kidd and Popa. She rounded the 'keeper and fired a shot, but the ball rang off the right post and was cleared out of the box by an MU defender.
• Miami had a chance with just over four minutes to go, as a pass by Caroline Mortonson put Cook past the BG back line. But, Falcon goalkeeper Payton O'Malley came off of her line to cut down the angle, and Cook's shot went just wide of the right post.
