Slater Family Ice Arena to Reintroduce Organ Tonight Against Ferris State
November 14, 2025 | General, Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – After years of absence, the sound of an organ echoing through the Slater Family Ice Arena will return tonight as the Falcons take on the Ferris State Bulldogs at 7:07 p.m.
In 1970, just three years after the grand opening of the then-named "BGSU Ice Arena," an organ was introduced to bring more excitement to Bowling Green ice hockey games. The idea was brought forward by then–Director of Athletic Promotion James Krone. The organ sat atop the skate shop, surrounded by a metal cage to protect it from stray pucks and sticks. From it, fans would hear traditional sporting songs, rallying notes, and occasionally the national anthem bellowing out of the speaker system. As years went by and a modern sound system was introduced to bring in-game music to the venue, the organ eventually fell out of use.
Tonight, it will be located in the band section next to the Bleacher Creatures and will be played by a member of the BGSU pep band. Fans will hear a mix of in-game music and notes from the organ, in addition to the cutting of skate blades into the ice, players crashing into the boards, and the cheering of Bowling Green hockey fans.
