March 06, 2026 | Ice Hockey
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bowling Green Falcons (18-10-7) battled all night but fell to the No. 20 Michigan Tech Huskies (22-12-3) on Friday night, 5-3, inside the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Michigan Tech takes the first game of the CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinals, a best-of-three series.
The Falcons peppered the Michigan Tech goalie, outshooting the Huskies 29-13 over the final two frames, but weren't able to equalize before Michigan Tech sealed the game with a late empty-net goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Michigan Tech got things going 3:42 into the game when Carson Birnie scored, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
• Max Martin responded with 8:46 left in the first period, tipping in a pass from Brayden Crampton. Ben Doran was credited with the second assist.
• Roughly three minutes later, Michigan Tech took a 2-1 lead when an Isaac Gordon shot was saved but knocked in off a BGSU skate.
• At 8:22 of the second period, the Falcons tied the game on a goal by Gustav Stjernberg, who tipped in a saved shot by Jackson Niedermayer. Brody Waters was credited with the second assist.
• With 2:33 left in the second period, Doran was tagged for a cross-checking penalty, giving Michigan Tech the power play. About 26 seconds later, Noah Reinhart scored a power-play goal past Tyler Palmer to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead heading into the final intermission.
• Michigan Tech added an insurance goal with 6:50 remaining in regulation to extend the lead to 4-2.
• BGSU went on the power play with 5:06 left. Toward the end of the advantage, the Falcons pulled the goalie for a 6-on-4 opportunity, which proved profitable as Jérémie Minville scooped the puck in for the goal. Quinn Emerson and Dominik Rymon were credited with assists.
• BGSU later pulled the goalie again, and Michigan Tech scored an empty-net goal with 23 seconds remaining to ice the game.
