Velasco has a Double-Double; Falcons Hit a School-Record 18 Three-Pointers in Senior-Night Win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team hit a school-record 18 three-point field goals on Wednesday evening (Feb. 26), in a 91-61 dismantling of Ohio University at the Stroh Center.
BGSU has won five consecutive games and seven of the last eight contests.
On Senior Night, fourth-year Falcon Amy Velasco had a double-double, with 22 points and 11 assists. Sophomore Paige Kohler also scored 22 points and dished out six assists, as the Falcons (16-11, 9-6 Mid-American Conference) had 26 assists on 31 field goals in the win.
Lexi Fleming and Erika Porter, the two players who were recognized along with Velasco in Senior Night festivities prior to tipoff, each scored 12 points in the victory.
Three Falcons – Kohler (six), Velasco (five) and Fleming (four) – made at least four three pointers.
Kennedi Watkins led the Bobcats (6-20, 4-11 MAC) with 16 points, while Bailey Tabeling added 14.
BGSU had a whopping 43-22 rebounding advantage in the win, and the Falcons outscored the Bobcats in each of the four quarters.
The Falcons shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first half, rolling up a 50-27 lead at the intermission. BGSU wound up shooting over 50% from the floor for the second-straight game, finishing with a 31-for-58 (53.4%) performance. BG went 18-for-36 (50%) from the arc.
With the win, the Falcons clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland. The tourney begins with quarterfinal-round games on Wednesday, March 12.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons' total of 18 three-point field goals made, as mentioned, broke the school record. BGSU had made 16 triples on no fewer than eight previous occasions, most recently against Furman in March of 2022.
FIRST QUARTER
• After exploding for 30 points in the Falcons' win over Toledo on Saturday night (Feb. 22), Amy Velasco picked up right where she left off. Velasco scored five of BGSU's eight first-quarter baskets, and assisted on the other three.
• The lead changed hands five times in the first six minutes of the contest, before the Falcons took control. After the Bobcats got the scoring started, Velasco's cross-court pass resulted in a Paige Kohler three-pointer from the left side of the court. Both the BGSU triple and the Velasco assist were harbingers of things to come.
• Anyssa Jones scored her second bucket of the game, and Bailey Tabeling drove and scored to give the visitors a 6-3 lead. But, Velasco cut along the baseline, took a Johnea Donahue pass and hit a layup, and after a Taya Ellis steal, Velasco found Lexi Fleming for a three-pointer and an 8-6 lead with just over two minutes gone.
• But, Tabeling's inbounds pass found Danni Scully for a layup, and Tabeling then hit a long three-pointer to give the visitors an 11-8 lead as the Falcons used a timeout.
• Out of the timeout, Velasco took a Donahue pass and hit a three-pointer, and after a Fleming steal, Velasco's floater gave BG a 13-11 lead six minutes into the contest. The 'Cats answered with an Aliah McWhoter hoop, but Velasco drained a three-point try from the right wing, putting her into double figures and giving her team the lead for good.
• Then, Velasco found Ellis for a layup, and when the senior hit a transition three-pointer, the Falcons had a 21-13 lead, and it was the Bobcats' turn to use a timeout. Velasco had 13 points in the game's first seven-plus minutes.
• The Bobcats scored the last five points of the quarter to cut BGSU's lead to three points after 10 minutes. Ellis blocked an Ohio shot attempt in the waning seconds of the period.
SECOND QUARTER
• Kohler opened the second-quarter scoring with a three-pointer from the right side, and after Erika Porter split a pair of free throws, Velasco fed Fleming for a triple. A turnover gave the ball back to the Falcons, and Velasco found Fleming for another three-pointer. The Falcons had a 10-0 run in the first 2:06 of the quarter, and BG led by a 31-18 count.
• Kennedi Watkins stopped that run with a layup, but Velasco hit a pair of free throws, as the Falcons' next six points all came from the stripe. Two Porter charity tosses gave BGSU a 37-20 lead.
• Ellis powered her way inside for a layup – BGSU's first field goal in four and a half minutes – and a 39-21 lead. Kohler cut along the baseline, took a Velasco pass and made a layup, and after an Ohio miss, Velasco found Kohler again, this time for a transition three-pointer that increased the lead to 44-23.
• Ellis hit another layup, and after Jones answered with a driving layup, Emily Siesel drilled a three-point try in the final minute of the half. The Falcons would take a 50-27 lead into the locker room.
• Kohler had nine points in the second quarter to match Ohio's team total. Velasco had five assists in the second period alone.
THIRD QUARTER
• The teams traded points early in the third quarter. A nifty offensive rebound by Porter saw the fifth-year collegian save the ball on the baseline, flipping it to Donahue for a layup that opened the second-half scoring. After a near turnover by the Falcons, Fleming grabbed the ball and lobbed it to Porter for a layup and a 54-30 lead.
• Porter hit two more layups in the next few minutes, then made a pair of free throws at the 6:06 mark, and when Velasco took a return pass from Kohler and hit a corner three, the Falcons had a 63-36 lead. Then, Kohler rebounded an Ohio miss and the Falcons were off and running. The soph found Fleming for a right-side triple, and the lead was 30 points as the Bobcats used a timeout.
• Ohio scored the next eight points, holding the Falcons scoreless for nearly three minutes. But, Kohler scored the last four points of the period, with her triple giving the Falcons a 70-44 lead as the teams headed to the final quarter.
• Porter had eight points in the third period, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 2-of-3 from the line.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Kohler opened the fourth period with a three-pointer after a pass from Velasco, and the soph returned the favor half a minute later, finding Velasco for a three-ball and a 76-46 lead. The 'Cats scored the game's next five points, but after a Siesel steal, Velasco's long pass lead to a Donahue run-out and a 78-51 lead.
• The visitors got a Kate Dennis three-pointer and a Cassidy Lafler layup, but Donahue found Siesel for a record-tying three-ball – BG's 16th triple of the game – with 4:15 to go. Then, after Lafler answered with a long-distance make of her own, Siesel found Kohler for the record-breaking trey and an 84-59 lead with 3:30 to go.
• Laila Harrison had a pair of offensive rebounds and layups in the final three minutes of the contest, and in between, Jasmine Fearne knocked down the Falcons' 18th triple of the night.
NOTES & NUMBERS
• Velasco's total of 11 assists tied her career best, as she also dished out 11 assists in games at Green Bay (March 20, 2023) and Buffalo (Jan. 24, 2024).
• Velasco now has seven 20-point games this season and 14 in her career.
• She has four games with double-digit assists, and now has two double-doubles this season and three in her career.
• In addition to the Falcons' four double-digit scorers on Wednesday night, BGSU got six points from both Taya Ellis and Emily Siesel and four from Laila Harrison and Johnea Donahue.
• Donahue and Ellis tied for game honors with seven rebounds apiece.
• Siesel posted career-high totals in both points and steals (three).
• Ellis was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. In addition to her six points and seven boards, she also had a game-high three blocked shots.
