Velasco Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Senior standout earns league weekly honor for the second time this season
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Amy Velasco has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office late Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 26).
Velasco earns the honor for the second time this season and the third time in her BGSU career.
Velasco, a native of Centerville, Ohio (Centerville H.S.), led the Falcons in both scoring and assists as BGSU went 2-0 last week. She averaged 22.5 points and 5.0 assists per game in victories over Western Michigan and Toledo. In the latter game, Velasco exploded for 30 points against the Rockets at the Stroh Center, scoring 10 points in both the third and fourth quarters of that 81-72 win on Saturday evening (Feb. 22). Velasco also dished out five assists vs. UT. She was 9-of-15 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, and she went a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
That performance came three days after Velasco had led BG in scoring at WMU (Feb. 19), with 15 points and five assists in a 70-63 victory.
Velasco moved up three spots on BGSU's career scoring list in the win over UT. She now ranks eighth in BG history in scoring, and is sixth in assists.
After a 22-point, 11-assist performance in Wednesday night's (Feb. 26) 91-61 win over Ohio, Velasco now has 16.2 points and 4.8 assists per game, leading the Falcons in both categories. She is shooting 42.1 percent from the three-point line and 92.7% from the free-throw line.
In the classroom, Velasco is a physical education & health education major with a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. Nominees must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Velasco and the Falcons have won five-straight games and seven of the last eight contests. BGSU will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (March 1), taking on Northern Illinois in DeKalb. The Falcons' final home game of the season is next Wednesday evening (March 5), vs. Kent State at the Stroh Center.
