Junior goes 6-for-7 from the arc en route to a BGSU season-high 26 points
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Junior Paige Kohler scored a season-high 26 points on Tuesday evening (Feb. 10), leading the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to a 72-61 win over the University at Buffalo. The Mid-American Conference game took place inside the Stroh Center.
Kohler's was 6-of-7 from the three-point arc for the Falcons (13-11, 5-7 MAC), and both her overall point total and her three-point field goal total were BGSU season highs. She had a team-leading nine rebounds on the night.
Sophomore Lauren Gerken had 12 points to join Kohler in double digits, while senior Kaia Woods had nine points and five rebounds, and tied for game honors with six assists and three steals.
Meg Lucas had a double-double for the Bulls (2-22, 0-12 MAC), with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Three of her teammates hit double digits in the scoring column as well, as Aniya Rowe scored 13 points, Ella Corry 12 and Diann Jackson 10.
Kohler was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown in the opening quarter, and the Falcons held the Bulls to just five second-quarter points. BG led by a game-high 22 points late in the half before taking a 41-20 lead into the locker room.
The lead was 22 points late in the third period before the Bulls mounted a comeback. A 23-7 got the visitors as close as six points with just over four minutes to go, before junior Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick knocked down a three-point try. The lead reached 11 points when Gerken connected from the arc with 3:25 remaining, and after UB got within eight with 1:42 on the clock, four BGSU free throws made it a double-digit game once again.
The Bulls had a 46-18 lead in points in the paint, but the Falcons hit 11 three-pointers to UB's two.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first eight points in just over 90 seconds, as Lauren Gerken and Paige Kohler sandwiched three-pointers around a pair of Kaia Woods free throws. The Bulls got on the scoreboard with a Meg Lucas layup, and after a long two-pointer by Gerken, Lucas scored again in the paint. But, Kohler knocked down another three-point attempt for a 13-4 BGSU lead.
• Kohler's third triple of the quarter gave the Falcons a 16-8 advantage midway through the period, but UB scored the next four points to cut that lead in half. The lead was still four points when Kohler hit her fourth triple in the final minute of the period, and the Falcons would take a 21-15 lead into the second period.
• Kohler, as mentioned, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the arc in the opening period, en route to 12 of BG's 21 points.
SECOND QUARTER
• Fourth-year Falcon Jasmine Fearne headed up at the outset of the second period. She grabbed a defensive rebound, headed downcourt and took a pass from Kohler for a trailing three. Then, after a Gerken layup, Fearne took a Woods pass and knocked down a corner three to give BG an 8-0 run and a 29-15 lead.
• Lucas scored UB's first hoop of the quarter on a layup nearly four minutes in, but Johnea Donahue assisted on back-to-back BGSU buckets, finding Woods for an acrobatic reverse layup, then spotting a cutting Kohler for two more points. When Woods picked Aniya Rowe's pocket and sailed in for an uncontested layup, the Falcons had a 35-17 lead as the Bulls used a timeout.
• Rowe's layup proved to be the game's only scoring over the next two and a half minutes, but after a Taya Ellis putback and a driving layup by Woods, the Falcons had a 41-20 lead at the half.
• BGSU held UB to just five points on 2-of-11 shooting in the second period. Meanwhile, Fearne and Woods each had six points in the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Bulls scored the first four points of the second half, on layups by Ella Corry and Diann Jackson, and Jackson would hit a pair of layups over the next few minutes. But, Kohler hit a pair of three-point tries just over 30 seconds apart, and BG's lead was 20 points, at 48-28.
• Layups by Kohler and Ellis gave BG a 52-30 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the period, and after a quick 5-0 run by the Bulls, Gerken knocked down a pair of free-throw tries. BG had a 54-36 lead after three periods.
FOURTH QUARTER
• A three-point play by Rowe opened the period, and Jackson hit a layup as well. Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick scored for the hosts two minutes into the period, but a Corry three-pointer cut the Falcons' lead to 12, and Corry then hit a layup to make it a 56-46 game with 7:03 to go.
• Jaedyn Cook scored off of a Kohler inbound pass, but Rowe's three-ball made it a single-digit game. And, after a Cook free throw, UB scored the next four points, with a Corry charity toss cutting the Falcons' advantage to six points, 59-53, with 4:15 on the clock.
• But, Bland-Fitzpatrick answered with a three-pointer – her first of the season – and after Rowe's layup, Gerken took a Fearne pass and drained a triple try as well, giving the Falcons a 65-54 lead with 3:25 remaining. The Bulls got as close as eight points on a Paula Lopez layup with 1:42 left, but two free throws each by Kohler and Ky'Aira Miller restored BG's double-digit advantage for good.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will hit the road to face Ball State on Saturday (Feb. 14). That game will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Worthen Arena in Muncie.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will return to the Stroh Center for the next two games, hosting Western Michigan next Wednesday (Feb. 18) and Toledo three days later (Sat., Feb. 21).
