BGSU Locked Into MAC Tournament, Fifth And Sixth Seeds Still In Play
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will wrap up the regular season on Friday (March 6) with a 6:30 p.m. tip against the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Ypsilanti. The Falcons enter with their spot in the MAC Tournament already clinched, but their seed undecided. Bowling Green could be as high as the fifth seed, but can't drop lower than the sixth seed. The game is set to be streamed on ESPN+ while a radio feed will be available on WFRO Eagle 99 from Todd Walker for the game between the Falcons and Eagles.Â
Opening Tip
Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for the 105th time in program history and the second time this season. The all-time series leans to Bowling Green with a record of 59-45 against Eastern Michigan with the record when playing in Ypsilanti being 24-23, favoring EMU. In the meeting earlier this season between the two, BGSU claimed an 85-79 victory at home on Jan. 17, including an 11-1 stretch over the final four minutes in the Falcons' favor. In the first meeting, BGSU was led by a 25-point outing from Mayar Wol and a double-double by Troy Glover II with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In total, five Falcons logged a double-digit scoring days, including Javontae Campbell (18), Josiah Shackelford (13) and Javon Ruffin (12).
A Bowling Green Win Would…
Tending To The Seeds
The Falcons have clinched their spot in Cleveland, but their seed and opponent for the first round of the MAC Tournament is still yet to be decided. BGSU enters the weekend with the fifth and sixth seeds still in play. A BGSU win and an Ohio loss would bump Bowling Green up to the fifth seed, playing Toledo in the first round of the MAC Tournament, set as the second game on March 12. Any other combination of outcomes for BGSU and Ohio on Friday (March 6) would result in BGSU remaining as the sixth seed, playing Kent State in the first round of the MAC Tournament, set as the fourth and final game on March 12. The Ohio Bobcats are set to play the Miami RedHawks in a 9 p.m. tip Friday night (March 6) on ESPN2.
Scouting The Eagles
Since the last meeting between BGSU and EMU, Eastern Michigan has posted a record of 1-10 with their lone win during the stretch coming against Central Michigan, 66-54, on Feb. 17. During the stretch, EMU has had a handful of close contests. They lost to Kent State 76-75 at home and 95-91 on the road. They also lost to UMass by just three, 70-67, on the road and by only two to Akron at home, 66-64. Eastern Michigan is coming off a 72-67 loss to Buffalo on the road Tuesday night (March 3).Â
BGSU vs. Eastern Michigan, All-Time
Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan will be meeting 105th time in program history and the second time this season. The Falcons hold the all-time advantage, 59-45, and are a win away from tying the series when hosted by EMU, currently leaning to the Eagles, 24-23. Bowling Green has won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the two as well as six of the last seven played in Ypsilanti. In the meeting earlier this year, BGSU outscored EMU 11-1 over the final four minutes to claim an 85-79 victory at home.Â
BGSU Reaches Another 20-Year Mark
With the win over UMass, the Falcons clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament for the third-straight season. With the MAC Tournament beginning in the quarterfinals (Round of 8), the Falcons will be playing in the quarterfinals in three-straight years for the first time since 2003-05. One small caveat, the Falcons did make the quarterfinals each season from 2019-21, but the game wasn't played in 2020 due to the tournament being canceled for COVID.Â
One Record Down, One To Go
Through 30 games, Javontae Campbell is averaging 3.1 steals per game with 93 total for the season, leading the nation in both stats. With 93 steals, Campbell has already broken his own single-season program record that he set last year. As for the MAC record, Campbell is within range with one regular season game remaining and any postseason games counting towards the mark. The MAC record is set at 103 by Ball State's Bonzi Wells in 1997-98. For those looking to follow Campbell's projections, Falcon Sports Media Network's Tyler Kavalecz is doing a game-by-game update on his Twitter/X page (@TKavaleczSports).Â
Glover Enters BGSU Record Book
Troy Glover II has been strong in the paint defensively for the Falcons, logging at least one block in 13 of the last 16 games for Bowling Green, including 12 over a three-game stretch from Feb. 11-17. The surge for Glover has not only pushed him up the MAC leaderboards, now third behind only CMU's Nathan Claerbaut and EMU's Godslove Nwabude, but also has him inside BGSU's top 10 for a single season. With 44 blocks this year, Glover is tied for 10th on BGSU's single-season blocks list. Any postseason stats would count towards the record book total as well.Â
Towns Doing It All In Final Year
In his sixth collegiate season, and fourth at Bowling Green, Sam Towns is going all out as the year winds down. In the game against Western Michigan (Feb. 24), Towns sank a career-high five three-pointers. He followed it up in the win over UMass with 15 rebounds and a career-high seven assists, leading the team in both stats. Over the last seven games, Towns has led or tied for the team-lead in rebounds six times while leading the team in points during that span once as well as assists once.Â
Campbell Closing In On History
Javontae Campbell has a chance to do something that only Antonio Daniels can claim to have done for BGSU. Campbell is currently 40 points shy of entering the top 10 for single-season points at BGSU and has already entered the top 10 for single-season assists. Currently, Antonio Daniels is the only player in the top 10 for both, second with 767 points and third with 216 assists from the 1996-97 season. While Campbell has the opportunity to do so in the regular season with a 40-point game, all postseason stats will count towards the milestones as well.Â

A Bowling Green Win Would…
- Sweep the season series against Eastern Michigan for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
- Even the all-time series against EMU when played in Ypsilanti at 24-24.
- Conclude the regular season with a BGSU win for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign.
- Grant Bowling Green a .500 record in true road games this season with a 6-6 standing while being above .500 in true road MAC games at 5-4.Â
- Give the Falcons 1,498 wins in program history, drawing close to the 1,500-win milestone.
