Zhaque (zhah-QWAY) Gray spent the 2023-24 season as a member of the BGSU women's basketball staff. She joined the program as the Director of Player Personnel in June of 2023.
In that '23-24 season, first-year head coach Fred Chmiel, Gray and Company guided the Falcons to a winning record and a postseason tournament berth despite a veritable plethora of injuries.
After seeing the departure of four starters from the previous year's team, the Falcons were picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference in 2023-24. Despite losing an estimated 126 player-games to injury, BGSU finished in a tie for fourth in the final league standings and advanced to the WNIT.
Gray joined Chmiel’s staff after spending the 2022-23 season as a graduate assistant at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa.
A standout player at Penn State who also played at the professional level, Gray came to the SFU staff after working in the private sector, including five-plus years as a pharmaceutical sales representative.
Gray played a season of professional basketball in Wasserburg, Germany, where she helped her team to a league championship.
In 2014, Gray made the training camp roster of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky. She was among more than 40 players who attended a Sky open tryout session, and became the first open-tryout participant in franchise history to earn an invite to training camp.
Gray played collegiate basketball at Penn State from 2008-12, where she was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection and finished her career seventh in program history with 149 three-point field goals made.
After coming off the bench to play in all but one game as a freshman in 2008-09, Gray made nine starts and averaged 5.0 points per game as the Lions went 17-14 and advanced to the WNIT in her sophomore season of 2009-10.
In Gray’s final two seasons, Penn State went a combined 51-17, with a 25-10 mark in her junior season of 2010-11. That season saw Gray start all 35 games and average 9.5 ppg while hitting 63 three-point field goals, good for second on the team, as the Lady Lions finished second in the Big Ten Conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s second round.
In 2011-12, Penn State went 26-7 overall and won the Big Ten title with a 13-3 league ledger. Gray started all 33 games and was third on the team with 10.6 ppg. She hit 48 three-pointers, again ranking second on the club, and helped PSU to the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16.
In addition to finishing her career on the school’s three-point list, Gray also was among the PSU career leaders in free-throw percentage (.782; 104-of-133).
While at Penn State, Gray was teammates with Maggie Lucas during her final two seasons, while Chmiel was an assistant coach with the Lady Lions during those same two years.
A native of Chicago, Gray is a graduate of John Hope College Preparatory H.S., where she helped the Lady Eagles to three Chicago Public League championships and was the only unanimous selection to the 3A All-State First Team in her senior season of 2007-08.
