A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Nelson played in 18 matches during the 2012 season, making one start. That start, the first of her collegiate career, came in the match at Miami (Oct. 21). Nelson also recorded her first collegiate point in that match, with an assist that gave the Falcons a second-half lead in Oxford. She played a long free kick into the penalty box, where Demy Whitaker headed it home to give BGSU a lead against the eventual MAC regular-season champions. Nelson played a season-high 47 minutes in that MU match.
Nelson saw action at one match in the 2011 season after missing the entire 2010 campaign due to injury. She made her BG playing debut in the Sept. 9, 2011, match at Michigan State, playing six minutes vs. the Spartans.
Nelson, who had been projected to start at a defender spot in 2010, missed the entire season due to an injury suffered during preseason practice.
A two-time team MVP at Saint Thomas Aquinas H.S. (‘10), Nelson was an Eastern Kansas League honorable-mention selection as a senior, as the Saints went 15-4-1 and posted a state runner-up finish. She helped the team to state titles in both 2006 and ’07.
Nelson earned the school’s Senior Award, and also earned the Pax Cristi Award, given for four years of outstanding achievements, service and leadership. And, she won the Blake Mulvany Award, a leadership award given to one male and one female in the senior class).
A dietetics major at BGSU, Nelson has a 3.11 cumulative GPA through the Spring 2013 semester. The daughter of Gene and Barbara Nelson, she has two older sisters.
Nelson played club ball for KCFC Alliance Intensity, helping that team to six consecutive Kansas State Cup championships and a pair of regional championships. The team qualified for nationals twice during her tenure..
