1999-2000 Women's Swimming Roster

Randy Julian
- Class:
- Redshirt Freshman
Julian, 44, has given new life to the program with his enthusiasm and determination of bringing the Falcons back to their glory days in the Mid-American Conference.
This year's men's squad is filled with youth as nine newcomers and 16 returnees bring hope for the Falcons to move to the upper echelon of the MAC. The women's team has 20 returnees and eight newcomers bringing an optimistic outlook for the 1999-2000 season.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Julian served five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame (1990-95) where he coordinated the Irish recruiting efforts, directed all phases of the team's training program, and assisted in the development of the UND Swim Camps.
Under the guidance of head coach Tim Welsh, Julian helped the Fighting Irish to four Midwestern Collegiate Conference women's championships (1991-95) and one men's league title (1991-92). The UND ladies finished 36th, 34th, and 30th, respectively, at the NCAA Championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Both the men's and women's squads captured the national Catholic Championship his first four years with the program. UND set 34 men's and women's school records during Julian's tenure. The Irish also produced their first All-American and NCAA women's finalist -- Tanya Williams -- during his stay in South Bend.
Prior to his five seasons at UND, Julian served as an assistant coach to Doug Ingram at Southern Illinois (Carbondale) University for two years (1988-90). While at SIU, Julian aided in the development of six Division I Men's All-Americans and helped guide the 1989-90 men's unit to a 9-2 record and a 20th-place standing at the NCAA Championships. One of the Salukis' victories in his final season came over No. 8-ranked Florida at the Alabama National Invitational Tournament. Julian saw nine school records broken while at SIU.
Also very active in the club circles, Julian served as head coach of The Dads Swim Team in Houston, Texas, for six seasons (1982-88). He also was an age group (assistant) coach with The Dads Club Team for two years (1980-82) after acting in a similar capacity with The Woodlands (Texas) Swim Team for two campaigns (1978-80). While working with The Dads program as head coach, Julian led his men's team to the national YMCA championship, a sixth-place effort at the U.S.S. Outdoors, and a 10th-place standing at the U.S.S. Indoors in 1985. His 1987 and 1988 men's and women's teams both finished in the "Top 10" at the YMCA Nationals. In all, he tutored 27 YMCA All-Americans and 14 individual champions. Julian, who coached at the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival as an assistant for the silver-medal winning South squad, helped to place several of his swimmers in international competitions, including Rick Bodor who swam for Hungary in the 1988 Olympics.
Julian also assisted in the development of Olympian Royce Sharp -- an age group swimmer in The Dads program -- and was honored for his efforts by Coca-Cola of Texas during the summer of 1992. Another former swimmer under Julian at Dads, Doug Gjertsen, swam in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games.
The W.H. Adamson High School graduate ('74) began his coaching career as an assistant with the Lamar University Swim Club in Beaumont, Texas, for one year (1975-76). He then accepted a position with the West End YMCA -- also in Beaumont -- where he served as head coach for two years (1976-78) before moving on to The Woodlands.
Julian was a two-year letterwinner at Lamar University (1975-77) after transferring from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, an NAIA institution. While at MU, he was a national qualifier in the 100 back, 400 medley relay, and the 400 free relay in 1975.
Julian completed his undergraduate work at SIU in 1990, earning a bachelor of science degree in Community Health Education. A member of the American Swim Coaches Association, Julian is single and resides in Bowling Green. He is the son of Ray and Mary Lou Julian of Sulphur Springs, Texas.
