Mike Huling recently completed his second season as an assistant coach at Bowling Green State University in 2014. Since joining the Falcon coaching staff, Huling has mentored four All-MAC selections and been part of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament champion and NCAA Regional team. Bowling Green qualified for the MAC Tournament in both seasons under Huling.
Â
Serving as the primary hitting coach for the majority of the 2014 season, the Falcon offense saw a transformation during the second half of the 2014 season, under the tutelage of Huling. The Falcons raised their season batting average from .266 to .286 under Huling, while increasing offensive productivity, as well.
Â
Bowling Green averaged 6.43 runs per game under Huling, after scoring just 80 runs through the first 22 games of the season which saw the Falcons start just 6-16. BGSU’s slugging percentage increased .37 points (.327 to .364) and their on-base percentage rose .44 points (.336 to .380) under Huling’s guidance.
Â
Most impressive was Bowling Green’s knack for stealing bases during the second half of the season. The Falcons, after stealing just 20 bases through the first 22 games of the season, stole 56 bases over the final 30 games (19-11 record).
Â
The plate approach by Bowling Green hitters was much improved under Huling. During their 6-16 start, Bowling Green averaged 8.86 hits per game, but just 3.64 runs. Over the last 30 games of the season, which saw Bowling Green go 19-11, the Falcons averaged 9.73 hits per game, 6.43 runs per game, and 1.90 extra-base hits per game.
Â
The Falcons had double-digit hits in 15 of their final 30 games, while scoring at least six runs in 17 of those games. The Orange and Brown also stole multiple bases against the opposition in 18 of their final 30 contests.
Â
Several individuals stood out over the final 30 games of the 2014 season, including first team All-MAC selections T.J. Losby (catcher) and Brian Bien (shortstop). Four Falcons compiled batting averages of .300-plus over the final 30 games, while nine different members of Bowling Green had on-base percentages of better than .325 over the 30-game stretch. Four Falcons averaged better than a hit per game to finish the season, while six players scored 20-or-more runs in the last 30 games of the campaign. Brandon Howard was a perfect 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts during the final 30 games of the season, after stealing just two bases during the first 22 games of 2014.
Â
Huling has also coached the outfield during his two seasons at Bowling Green. This past season, the Falcons had 14 outfield assists, split between their four primary outfielders.
Â
During his two seasons, Huling has been integral in the day-to-day operations of the Falcon baseball program. Huling has overseen travel, scouting reports, camps, and conditioning, while also heavily assisting in recruiting.
Â
Prior to coming to Bowling Green, Huling coached for one season at Mishawaka High School as the varsity assistant coach. He also coached the 16U Michiana Scrappers for two seasons.
Â
Huling graduated in 2011 from University of Southern Indiana, where he played for two seasons. The 2010 team at USI won the NCAA Division II National Championship. In his two seasons, Huling batted .342. In 2010, the year USI claimed the National Championship, Huling led the team with a .387 batting average with 49 RBI.
