For the fourth year in a row, BGSU Athletics will be counting down the top stories of the year all summer long. 2012-13 was a banner year for athletics at BGSU and the list of best moments of the year is arguably the strongest since beginning this annual event.
We will release the list one at a time throughout the summer until the No. 1 story of the year is announced on Aug. 5 -- just as BGSU football camp gets underway and the 2013-14 season has officially started! Don't forget to purchase your season tickets NOW!
Brooke Pleger Wins MAC And Regional Titles, Earns All-American Status
Redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger posted one of the best individual seasons in BGSU women's track and field history, dominating the Mid-American Conference in the hammer throw and earning first team All-American status along the way.
Pleger broke BGSU's school record in the first meet of the year, throwing the hammer 212-feet-6 and winning the Raleigh Relays (CLICK HERE FOR STORY). She improved upon that throw with a toss of 219-9 in her next meet, winning the Northeast Ohio Invitational. Pleger continued to roll during the regular season, winning the Ashland Alumni Open to head into the MAC Championships. In being named the MAC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete, Pleger broke the MAC Championship record with a throw of 216-3 to earn the league championship (CLICK HERE FOR STORY).
At the NCAA East Preliminary, Pleger became the first regional champion in BGSU history, throwing the hammer 210-1 to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships (CLICK HERE FOR STORY). While she was unable to win a national championship, Pleger was named first team All-American after placing seventh at the NCAA Championships with a throw of 209-0 (CLICK HERE FOR STORY).
