Eric Reed recently completed his fourth season on the Bowling Green State University men's soccer staff. Reed, who came to BGSU from Davidson College, began his duties with the Falcons in early February of 2014.
"Eric Reed was a strong addition to the BGSU men's soccer program," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "The playing pedigree and the experiences he brings are extremely valuable, but it is the quality of his character that sets him apart and makes him a perfect fit for our program and our community."
Reed, who primarily works with the goalkeepers, has helped the Falcons win a total of 39 matches over his first four seasons with the program. The 2016 BGSU team posted a second-place finish in the MAC regular-season standings, the program's highest finish since the 2002 campaign. BG was undefeated in conference play for the first time since 1996.
The Falcons were ranked among the Great Lakes Region top-10 teams in every week of the 2016 season, and finished the year ranked fifth in the region.
In 2016, under Reed's guidance, freshman 'keeper Anthony Mwembia earned All-MAC First-Team honors and was named to the College Soccer News Freshman All-America Second Team. Mwembia, who led the league and ranked among the top 20 in the nation in both goals-against average (0.73) and saves percentage (.831), was named the BGSU Athletics Male Newcomer of the Year for the 2016-17 academic year.
And, BGSU has been just as successful in the classroom. Both Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan were named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. Flynn became the first three-time Academic All-American in BGSU men's soccer history, while Sullivan became just the third Falcon to earn Academic All-America honors twice.
BGSU was the only school with two first-team selections on the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. And, the Falcons have had two overall selections to the team in each of the last two years. Flynn was named to the first team and Sullivan earned second-team honors in 2015, the first year BG had two players named to the team in program history.
On the pitch, that 2015 team began the season with five consecutive wins, breaking into the national rankings for the first time since 1999. The Falcons were 24th in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll released on Sept. 8.
In his first season with the Falcons. all Reed did was help the program to one of the most successful campaigns in recent memory while also winning a prestigious award. Reed was named 2014 Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Reed helped guide a youthful BG team to 14 wins and a trip to the championship match of the Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2014.
He joined a BG program that had lost 10 seniors off of the 2013 team, including a goalkeeper (Michael Wiest) who had started every second of every match in both 2012 and '13. The 2014 roster featured three 'keepers who had never played in a competitive match at BG.
Overall, BG had just eight returning letterwinners, including four starters, when preseason camp began in August, and the Falcons had 11 newcomers on the 23-man opening-day roster.
Nichols, Reed and Company, coming off of a 6-7-6 season in 2013, proceeded to more than double that win total, going 14-6-1. The program's victory total was the highest in 17 years, and BGSU advanced to the championship match of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2003.
Sophomore goalkeepers Ryan Heuton and Nick Landsberger and the BGSU defense combined to post eight shutouts in the fall of 2014. The Falcons led the MAC in total shutouts, and BG's team GAA of 0.91 ranked second in the conference.
