THIS WEEK: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team continues a five-game road swing this week, playing a pair of tough intra-state foes. The Falcons will open the month of December by facing Xavier University in a Wednesday (Dec. 1) night contest. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Memorial Fieldhouse (2,690).
Saturday afternoon (Dec. 4), the Brown and Orange will be in the state's capital to face the Ohio State University. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at OSU's Value City Arena (19,500).
Bowling Green has only two home contests scheduled in the 10-game non-league slate. The Falcons' next home game is Dec. 20 against Washington State.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU enters Wednesday's XU game with a 2-2 overall record. The Falcons won two of last week's three games, downing visiting St. Bonaventure Monday (Nov. 22) before splitting a pair of contests at the GranTree Inn Classic, hosted by Montana State University, over the weekend. BGSU lost to Mississippi Friday (Nov. 26) -- a game in which several school and NCAA records were set -- before beating Morehead State Saturday (Nov. 27).
The Falcons are 1-0 at home, 0-1 on the road and 1-1 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore guard Francine Miller leads the Falcons in scoring, with 18.3 points per game, and ranks second on the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and steals (2.0 spg).
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 15.5 points per game off the bench. Farmer leads the Falcons in three-point field goals made, with 13.
Farmer tied her own school record by making seven three-point field goals vs. Ole Miss. As a team, the Falcons set school single-game records for three-pointers made (14) and attempted (34).
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (12.3), and paces the team in rebounding (7.0).
Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Brown and Orange with 4.5 assists and 2.3 steals per outing, while averaging 3.3 points.
Kahle, Miller and Wappes are joined in the starting lineup by junior forward Afra Smith and sophomore center Dana Western.
Farmer, Kahle and Miller all have three double-digit scoring games, and one nine-point effort, in this year's four games.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished in third place in the East Division of the Mid-American Conference with a 9-7 league record.
The Brown and Orange, seeded fifth for the MAC Tournament, lost a quarterfinal game to host Akron, the fourth seed.
BGSU is shooting .422 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting just .360. The Falcons are scoring 76.8 points per contest, but allowing 77.0. BGSU is averaging 40.5 boards per game to the opponents' 49.3. The Falcons have shot .385 from three-point land, making 37 treys in 96 attempts.
DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 15-16. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 197-135 (.593). She came to BGSU after spending 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her last five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
RECORD-SETTING NIGHT: A number of records were set in BGSU's loss to Mississippi Friday (Nov. 26), including the following:
* BGSU set school single-game records for three-point field goals made (14) and attempted (34).
* Ole Miss set school records in the same two categories, with 17 three-pointers in 41 attempts.
* The two teams combined for 31 treys in 75 attempts ... both totals are believed to be NCAA records for two teams in a single game.
* BGSU junior Angie Farmer tied her own school record by making seven treys.
SCOUTING XAVIER: Xavier will bring a perfect 4-0 record into the BGSU game. The Musketeers defeated Oakland and UT-Chattanooga to win a tournament at Florida State last weekend. XU also has beaten UW-Milwaukee and Wright State this season. Xavier returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from the 1998-99 squad that went 24-9 last year, including an Atlantic 10 record of 11-5. The Musketeers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, nearly knocking off Connecticut on the road. Junior C/F Taru Tuukkanen leads the team in both scoring (17.3) and rebounding (7.3), while classmate Nicole Levandusky has 16.8 points and 6.0 boards. Levandusky was the MVP at the Florida State tourney, while Tuukkanen was named to the all-tournament team. The five XU starters -- freshman guard Amy Waugh, junior C/F Jennifer Phillips, senior forward Kim Hotz, Levandusky and Tuukkanen -- have combined to provide 88.5% of the team's scoring and 78.9 of Xavier's rebounding. Melanie Balcomb is 70-51 in her sixth year at Xavier and 98-77 in her eighth year as a collegiate head coach.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE: Ohio State enters the week with a 1-2 record, and the Buckeyes will host Rutgers Wednesday (Dec. 1) before meeting the Falcons Saturday. OSU opened the season with a home win over High Point Tuesday (Nov. 23), before splitting two games at the Harvard Invitational over the weekend. The Buckeyes lost to the host school Friday (Nov. 26) before beating Sacred Heart the next day. OSU welcomes back six letterwinners, including three starters, from a 1998-99 squad that went 17-12 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten Conference. Senior forward Michaela Moua has led the Buckeyes in scoring in all three games, and is averaging 18.0 points per contest. Sophomore guard Lauren Shenk is averaging 9.3 points, while freshman forward LaToya Turner is scoring 8.3 points off the bench. Junior forward Courtney Bale averages 7.7 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Sophomore guards Tomeka Brown and Laura Ingham join Bale, Moua and Shenk in the probable starting lineup. Beth Burns, 34-25 in her third year at OSU, is 185-107 in her 11th year overall.
THE SERIES: BGSU and Xavier are tied, 2-2, in the all-time series between the teams. XU won last year's meeting, 92-75, in Anderson Arena (Dec. 30, 1998). Xavier also captured the lone meeting in Cincinnati, a 78-62 verdict on Nov. 29, 1994.
Ohio State holds a 10-1 advantage in the series with the Falcons, and the Buckeyes are 4-0 in home games vs. BG. Saturday's contest will mark the teams' first meeting in Value City Arena. The squads have not met since a 92-74 Buckeye win on Nov. 24, 1995. That win was the eighth consecutive for OSU in the series. The teams have met just three times since 1981.
LAST WEEK: Sophomore Francine Miller led the way as the Falcons opened the home schedule with an 88-69 win over visiting St. Bonaventure Monday (Nov. 22) ... Miller scored 20 of her game- and career-high 26 points in the second half, as BG erased an eight-point halftime deficit ... bouyed by a 5-for-5 shooting performance (all three-pointers) by Shannon O'Connell, SBU led for nearly the entire first half ... the Bonnies led by eight points at the break ... after shooting just .333 from the floor in the first half, BGSU went 17-for-32 (.532) in the second stanza ... Miller sparked an 11-0 run early in that half ... she got things started with a three-point play and a layup, and Dana Western's three-point play capped the run and gave BG a 50-47 lead with 14:57 remaining ... the Falcons would not trail again ... after an SBU bucket, BGSU proceeded to score the next seven points ... in all, the Brown and Orange fashioned a 27-5 run over a nine-minute span ... the Falcon lead remained in double digits, with the largest margin being the 19-point final score ... three Falcons joined Miller in double digits, including Sherry Kahle (17), Angie Farmer (12) and Western (10) ... the home team outscored the Bonnies, 51-24, in the second half ... Jaymee Wappes led the Falcons with six steals, tying her career high ... Friday (Nov. 26), the Falcons opened play in Montana State's GranTree Inn Classic with an 80-63 loss to Mississippi ... long-range shooting was the norm in the this game, as both teams set school records for three-point field goals made and attempted ... Mississippi made 17 treys to the Falcons' 14 (in 34 attempts) ... the Falcons trailed by six, 48-42, at halftime, and cut the Ole Miss margin to four points early in the second half ... but, the Lady Rebels put the game out of reach with an 18-0 run ... MU outscored the Falcons by a 32-21 margin in the second half ... Farmer made seven three-pointers in the game, tying her own school record ... she also tied her career high with 21 points ... seven different Falcon players scored from beyond the arc ... Mississippi took 41 shots from three-point range with a trio of players hitting four apiece ... Ole Miss had a huge 51-31 edge on the boards with 23 of their rebounds at the offensive end ... Farmer was the only BG player to score in double figures for the Falcons as Miller and Kahle each had nine ... Saturday (Nov. 27), Farmer again led the Brown and Orange in scoring, with 20 points ... the Falcons captured the consolation game of the GranTree Inn Classic, 88-76, over Morehead State ... the game was close late in the first half, before the Falcons went on a 17-2 run to take a 37-23 halftime lead ... BG held MSU to just .235 (8-of-34) shooting from the field in the half, and .346 for the game ... the Falcons led by as many as 29 points (82-53) with 4:37 left, before a wild MSU run cut the lead to eight (84-76) in the final minute of play ... Farmer's 20 markers paced four Bowling Green players in double figures ... Miller added 17 markers, while Kahle had 13 and freshman Regina Smith added 10 ... Morehead had 24 offensive rebounds in the game and an overall 51-46 edge on the boards, but went just 8-of-41 from three-point range and 28-of-81 shots from the field ... BG was 12-of-25 from three-point range and 30-of-64 from the floor.
FARMER ON FIRE: Junior guard Angie Farmer culminated a successful week by being named to the all-tournament team at the GranTree Inn Classic ... Farmer tied her career high with a 21-point effort against Mississippi, and added 20 vs. Morehead State ... she tied her own school record by draining seven three-point field goals against Ole Miss.
FARMER ON FIRE II: Angie Farmer averaged a team-best 17.7 points in three games last week ... she totalled 53 points in an average of just 22.7 minutes per game ... Farmer shot .567 (17-of-30) from the field last week, including .565 (13-of-23) from three-point range ... she currently ranks fifth in BGSU history with 46 career treys made, and is second in career three-point percentage (.442, 46-of-104).
NCAA RECORDS SET?: The Falcons and Mississippi had quite a memorable game on Friday (Nov. 26) ... the teams combined to make 31 three-point field goals in 75 attempts ... both totals are believed to be NCAA Division I single-game records, pending confirmation from the NCAA Statistics Office.
BOMBS AWAY: Last year, BG broke the school single-season records in both three-pointers attempted and made ... the Falcons made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts ... those totals shattered the old records of 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... if the first four games are any indication, those records may be in serious jeopardy in 1999-2000 ... BGSU has attempted 96 treys, making 37, during that time ... that is an average of 9.25 three-pointers made and 24 attempted per game ... those numbers project to over 240 successful "threes" in 624 attempts over a 26-game schedule ... believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 144 shots from behind the arc, an average of 36 per game ... BG foes have made 43 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 30 three-point attempts in every game.
MORE THREE-POINT NOTES: The Falcons made 12 three-pointers in the Morehead State game Saturday (Nov. 27), a total that would have tied a school record ... one problem, though ... the Brown and Orange had set a new record the night before, with the 14 treys vs. Ole Miss.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BGSU's lone seniors will captain the Falcons as the squad boldly goes where no team has gone before (into the 21st Century) ... Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes are the co-captains of the 1999-2000 team.
MEET THE NEW KIDS: Seven of the 12 players on the Falcon roster are newcomers, including six freshmen ... junior transfer Afra Smith, redshirt freshman Rachal Hamilton and true frosh Pam Brown, Kim Griech, Megan Jerome, Regina Smith and Karen Stocz all joined the BG squad this fall.
MEET THE NEW KIDS II: For the first time this season, the Falcons had five freshmen on the floor at the same time ... Rachal Hamilton entered the BG lineup with 3:06 remaining in the Ole Miss game, joining classmates Kim Griech, Megan Jerome, Regina Smith and Karen Stocz.
SUCCESS IN HOME OPENERS: With the win over St. Bonaventure last Monday (Nov. 22), the Falcons kept an impressive streak going ... BGSU has captured 11 of the last 12 home openers ... the only loss during that time came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, three years ago.
WELCOME BACK: The Falcons have just five returnees from the 1998-99 squad ... in fact, only three players on the 12-woman roster were at BGSU prior to head coach Dee Knoblauch's arrival in August of 1998 ... those three are senior co-captains Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes and junior Angie Farmer ... sophomores Francine Miller and Dana Western round out the returning players for the Brown and Orange ... Kahle and Miller are returning starters, while Wappes was a part-time starter a year ago.
TAKE A NUMBER: Several of the returning players have changed uniform numbers ... after wearing #31 for three years, Sherry Kahle will wear #30 as a senior ... sophomore Dana Western was #25 a year ago, but will don #44 this season ... only Angie Farmer (#24), Francine Miller (#22) and Jaymee Wappes (#33) will be wearing the same uniforms as in 1998-99.
MILLER ON THE MARK: Sophomore Francine Miller, one of the Falcons' top players in her initial campaign, has picked up right where she had left off ... Miller led the Brown and Orange in points (21), rebounds (12) and steals (4) at Youngstown State ... she made three three-pointers in five attempts ... vs. SBU, Miller had a career-high 26 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists ... she made seven of her 10 shots from the field, including both of her three-point attempts, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line ... Miller had nine and 17 points, respectively, in the games in Montana ... she was slowed by an injury in those games, and her playing time there was somewhat limited ... Miller averaged 17.3 points while shooting .548 (17-of-31) from the field last week ... she was .625 (5-of-8) from three-point land, and a perfect 1.000 from the free-throw line, sinking all 13 of her attempts from the stripe.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: A number of current Falcons already are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... sophomore Francine Miller currently ranks first in career three-point percentage (.457, 42-of-92), while junior Angie Farmer is second (.442, 46-of-104) ... Farmer is fifth with 46 three-pointers made, while Miller and senior Jaymee Wappes are close behind with 42 ... senior Sherry Kahle has made 41 career three-pointers ... Kahle is tied for fourth all-time with 138 three-point attempts, while Wappes is seventh with 123 tries.
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS: The Falcons struggled in the first half of last Monday's (Nov. 22) game against St. Bonaventure ... at the half, BG trailed by eight points, and had shot just .333 from the field to the Bonnies' .400 ... addtionally, SBU had outrebounded the Falcons, 30-17, and had made seven three-pointers to BG's three ... after the break, however, the Falcons made 17-of-32 shots (.531) from the field, while holding SBU to a 10-for-33 (.303) performance ... BGSU grabbed 23 boards to the visitors' 16, and the Falcons held Bona to a 1-for-15 (.067) effort from three-point land ... BGSU outscored SBU, 51-27, in the final 20 minutes.
BGSU SIGNS THREE: Head coach Dee Knoblauch announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period ... on Nov. 17, the Falcons announced that Andrea Ault, Kelly Kapferer and Stefanie Wenzel will join the BGSU program next year ... Ault is a 6-0 forward who attends Urbana High School in Urbana, Ohio ... Kapferer, a 6-2 forward from Jefferson, Ohio, currently attends Jefferson H.S. ... Wenzel, a 6-0 guard from Sussex, Wis., attends Arrowhead Union H.S. in Hartland ... the Falcons plan to sign one more player during the late signing period in April.
FALCON NOTES: BGSU freshman guard Regina Smith had the first double-digit game of her career, with 10 points in just 11 minutes against Morehead State ... freshman guard Kim Griech had seven points in each of last week's three games ... sophomore Dana Western pulled down a career-high seven rebounds vs. Morehead State ... BGSU finished third in an in-season tournament for the third time in as many outings ... the Falcons lost the first game, but won the second game, at each of last year's tourneys as well as at Montana State last weekend ... the Falcons have not won an in-season tournament in nearly 11 years ... the Brown and Orange captured the Illini Classic (Dec. 2-3, 1988), but have not won a tourney since then ... BGSU has posted three second-place finishes, eight third-place showings and a fourth-place finish in that time ... BGSU has won three tournaments since capturing the Illini Classic, as the Falcons won the MAC Tournament in 1989, 1993 and 1994 ... the 1999-2000 season marks the 27th year of BGSU women's basketball ... over the first 26 seasons (plus four games), the Falcons have won 62.2 percent of the time, with a 414-252 overall record ... in 18 years of MAC play, BGSU has a 213-88 league ledger (.708) ... last year, the Falcons became the first MAC women's basketball program to reach the 400-victory plateau.
