Falcon Icers Sweep Visiting Alaska Fairbanks

The Bowling Green State University hockey team, after taking two from Alaska Fairbanks this past weekend (8-2, 5-4), hits the road again this Saturday. BG plays once this week, at Miami on Saturday, Nov. 6 with face-off at 7:05 p.m.
UPCOMING GAMES ...
The Falcons road trip continues the following weekend with a two-game set at Michigan State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13. Both games at Munn Arena begin at 7:05 p.m. with Friday's contest being the FOX Sports Net Detroit CCHA Game of the Week telecast.
Bowling Green's next home action will be on Nov. 19-20 when the Ferris State Bulldogs come to the BGSU Ice Arena for a pair of CCHA contests. Face-off both nights is at 7:35 p.m.
THE COACH ...
Falcon mentor Buddy Powers moved into a tie for 85th place on the NCAA all-time win list with BG's victory over Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 30. He is currently tied with Harry Cleverly (Boston University, Babson - 45-66), and trails Thom Lawler (Merrimack, - 65-78) by two wins (218-216). There have been more than 725 NCAA men's collegiate head hockey coaches.
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green leads in the all-time series against Miami with a 50-16-5 mark. BGSU won last year's season series with a 2-0-1 mark outscoring the RedHawks 14-8. The Falcons have recorded a 21-11-2 mark in games played at Goggin Ice Arena.
BG's win and tie in Oxford last season snapped a five-game Falcon losing streak at Goggin. Bowling Green has a 4-3-2 overtime mark at Miami.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENT ...
Miami is coming off a loss (5-2) and tie (2-2 OT) at Notre Dame last Thursday and Friday. The RedHawks, under the guidance of first-year head coach Enrico Blasi, enter Saturday's contest with a 4-2-2 overall mark and a 1-1-2 record against CCHA competition
Evan Cheverie leads Miami in points with 10 on four goals and six assists, while Gregor Krajnc is the team leader in goals with six. Ernie Hartlieb has eight points on a team-high seven assists. Eleven different players have accounted for Miami's 26 goals this year.
Three different goalies have all played between 148 and 184 minutes this year for Miami. Freshman David Burleigh is 2-0-0 with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. Andy Marsch (1-1-1, 2.60, .895) and Ian Olsen (1-1-1, 4.19, .882) are the returning netminders.
The Miami power play has scored on eight of 54 chances (14.8%), while the penalty killers have been successful on 42 of 54 opportunities (77.8%).
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEKEND ...
Bowling Green recorded its 400th win at home with an 8-2 triumph over Alaska Fairbanks last Friday. Greg Day and Ryan Murphy each scored twice for the Falcons, while Dennis Williams, Austin de Luis, Grady Moore and Ryan Fultz each tallied once.
After falling behind 1-0 on a power-play goal by Nathan Rocheleau, Day scored with 3:48 remaining in the opening stanza to pull BG even at the first intermission.
Murphy, Day and Williams all scored five-on-five goals in the middle stanza as BG opened a 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes.
The Falcons scored the first four goals of the final period before Sjon Wynia scored after coming out of the penalty box.
BG goalie Tyler Masters made 20 saves, while Nanook goalies Lance Mayes (21 saves) and Dirk Menard (10 saves) combined for 31 stops.
BGSU won its third consecutive game Saturday by defeating visiting Alaska Fairbanks 5-4.
UAF scored the lone goal of the first period, but the Falcons responded with four second period goals in a span of 9:36. Freshman Tyler Knight scored his first collegiate goal at 4:41, and sophomore Greg Day tallied his fifth of the year at 11:12 putting BG in front for good at 2-1.
Sophomore Ryan Wetterberg increased BG's lead at 13:29, and junior Dennis Williams scored his second of the weekend at 14:17. UAF's Daniel Carriere scored short-handed at 18:16 to pull the Nanooks to within two at 4-2.
BG senior blueliner B.J. Adams scored his first goal since Feb. 14, 1998 (a span of 49 games without a goal) at 6:51 of the final period, during a Falcon power play, that eventually became the game-winning goal as UAF scored twice in the final nine minutes to make the final score 5-4.
Falcon freshman netminder Tyler Masters made 20 saves, while UAF goaltender Lance Mayes was credited with 27 stops.
FALCON TIDBITS ...
After being held under 30 shots on goal in the first three games of the year, all losses, BG has put at least 30 shots on goal in each of the last three contests, all victories.
Sophomore center Greg Day has had three career three-point games. Feb. 13 at UAF, along with his back-to-back three-point efforts this past weekend.
Adams, besides stopping his goalless streak at 49 games, also garnered his first point since an assist at Notre Dame on Nov. 13, 1998.
Greg Day extended his goal-scoring streak to three games, while Doug Schueller and Curtis Valentine each extended their assist streaks to three games.
Nine different Falcons accounted for the 13 goals this past weekend with both rookie forwards, Ryan Fultz and Tyler Knight, scoring their first collegiate goals.
