BGSU Hockey Drops Two To Ferris

The Bowling Green State University hockey team will try to snap its five-game losing streak this weekend when it travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, for a pair of CCHA contests against the Lake Superior Lakers. Face-off both Friday and Saturday nights at Abel Arena is slated for 7:05 p.m.
UPCOMING GAMES ...
Bowling Green completes its first half schedule with a home-and-home series with Michigan on Dec. 3-4. Friday's contest is in BG (7:35 p.m.), while Saturday's rematch is at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor (7:05 p.m.).
The Falcons first contests after exams will be at the Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament in Troy, New York. BG will face the Engineers of RPI at 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 in the second game of the day. The Providence versus Union game is set for 5:30 p.m. Tournament action concludes on Thursday, Dec. 30 with the consolation (5:30 p.m.) and championship (8:30 p.m.) games.

Falcon mentor Buddy Powers has compiled an 11-7-0 record versus Lake Superior including a 6-4-0 record against the Lakers in the Soo.
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green leads in the all-time series versus Lake Superior with a 57-49-4 mark. BGSU won last year's season series with a 2-1-0 mark outscoring the Lakers 11-10. BG has recorded a 21-26-2 record in games in the Soo against LSSU.
The Falcons are 6-2-0 in their last eight games against LSSU in the Soo and 8-3-0 overall in the last 11 meetings. BG has a 2-3-2 overtime mark against the Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENT ...
Lake Superior recorded a two-game sweep at Michigan (3-0, 4-2) last weekend to improve to 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the CCHA.
Jeremy Bachusz had two goals on Friday including the game-winner, while Mike Vigilante scored twice on Saturday including the game-winner late in the second period. Jayme Platt recorded both victories stopping 71 of the Wolverines 73 shots on goal.
Ben Keup and Trent Walford lead the Lakers in scoring with identical 7-3--10 totals. Keup also leads the team in power-play goals (3) and plus/minus (+8). Blueliner Ryan Knox has a team-best six assists. Goaltender Jayme Platt has recorded a 5-3 mark with a 2.87 goals-against average and a 91.7 save percentage. Backup Scott Murray is 0-2 with a 4.03 gaa and a 85.7 save percentage.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEKEND ...
Bowling Green surrendered two first period goals to Ferris State on Friday and fell by a 3-1 score to the Bulldogs.
Freshman Ryan Fultz scored BG's lone goal early in the second period off assists from Greg Day and Austin de Luis. Falcon goalie Tyler Masters made 25 saves, while FSU netminder Vince Owen turned aside 24 BG shots.
The Bulldogs went 1-for-10 with the man-advantage while BG was zero-for-seven on the power play.
The Falcons jumped out early on FSU as Greg Day scored his seventh of the campaign just 23 seconds into the contest off assists from Ryan Fultz and Ryan Murphy.
FSU scored twice in the opening stanza and increased its lead to 3-1 with a second period power-play goal. BG battled back on power-play goals from Day and Grady Moore to tie the score at three after 40 minutes.
After FSU's Phil Lewandowski scored FSU's third power- play goal of the game 2:12 into the third period, BG's Scott Hewson scored at 8:59 to send the game into overtime where Chris Kunitz tallied at 2:31 to give the Bulldogs the sweep.
Marc Barlow and Ryan Fultz each assisted on both of BG's second period power-play goals.
BG netminder Tom Lawson, in his second collegiate start, made 28 saves, while FSU's Phil Osaer made 18 stops. BG went two-for-eight on the power play, while the Bulldogs scored on three of its 10 man-advantage opportunities.
FALCON TIDBITS ...
Sophomore center Greg Day has a point in eight of BG's 11 games this year, and is currently riding a four-game point streak (3-2--5, 2 PPG). He leads BG in goals (8), points (13) and power-play goals (2) this year.
Freshman forward Ryan Fultz has a point in six of the 10 games he has played including 2-3--5 in the last four games. He had a career-high three assists on Saturday and has a team-best plus/minus rating of +3.
Sophomore forward Scott Hewson scored his second career goal on Saturday. His marker at 8:59 of the third period tied the game at four. His first collegiate goal came at Ferris State on Feb. 27, 1999, and tied the game at four at the 8:01 mark of the third period. Both of Hewson's goals were unassisted.
The Falcon power-play snapped out of a 1-for-25 slump with a two-for-eight performance on Saturday.
When Greg Day scored the first goal of the game on Saturday, it marked only the third time this season BG had scored first.
