BG Icers Split At Lake Superior

The Bowling Green State University hockey team will complete its first half schedule with a home-and-home series with Michigan on Dec. 3-4. Friday's contest is in BG (7:35 p.m.), while Saturday's rematch is at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor (7:05 p.m.).
UPCOMING GAMES ...
Bowling Green's first contests after exams will be at the Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament in Troy, New York. BG will face the Engineers of RPI at 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 in the second game of the day. The Providence versus Union game is set for 5:30 p.m. Tournament action concludes on Thursday, Dec. 30 with the consolation (5:30 p.m.) and championship (8:30 p.m.) games.
BG returns home for six of its seven games in January. The Falcons open the new year with a home contest against Miami on Saturday, Jan. 8 (7:35 p.m.).
THE COACH ...
Falcon mentor Buddy Powers moved into 85th place on the NCAA all-time win list with BG's victory at Lake Superior on Nov. 27. He currently trails Thom Lawler (Merrimack, - 65-78) by one win (218-217). There have been more than 725 NCAA men's collegiate head hockey coaches.
Powers served as head coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for five seasons (1989-90 through 1993-94) prior to being named to his current position at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994. He spent one season as the head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89) leading the Tigers to a second-place finish in the Division III national championships.
Powers has compiled a 1-16-1 record versus Michigan including a 1-5-1 record at home against the Wolverines. The Falcons are 0-11 away from home versus Michigan under Powers, which includes an 0-10 mark in Ann Arbor (0-1 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit).
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green trails in the all-time series versus Michigan with a 27-53-2 mark. The Wolverines won last year's season series with a 5-0-0 mark outscoring the Falcons 27-13. BG has an 0-3-1 mark in its last four home meetings against Michigan, while the Falcons have lost their last 14 games in Ann Arbor since a 4-3 Bowling Green triumph on Feb. 8, 1992.
Michigan has won the last 10 contests overall and has a 12-0-1 mark against the Falcons in the last 13 meetings.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENT ...
Michigan rebounded from a 6-1 setback at home last Friday against Minnesota to defeat Wisconsin, 4-1, on Saturday and snap a three-game losing streak. The Wolverines are now 11-4 overall and 7-3 in the CCHA and lead the league with a 4.10 goals for per game average.
The Wolverines are led offensively by sophomore center Mike Comrie (11-14--25), sophomore defenseman Jeff Jillson (4-13--17) and junior right wing Josh Langfeld (3-11-14). Junior center Mark Kosick has a team-best five power-play goals. Michigan's power play has scored on 26 of 130 chances (20.0%), while stopping 98 of its opponents 110 opportunities (89.1%).
Due to an injury to No. 1 goaltender Josh Blackburn (2-0-0, 2.19, .882), the Wolverines have used both L.J. Scarpace (1-1-0, 1.75, .918) and Kevin O'Malley (8-3-0, 2.61, .881) in the interim.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEKEND ...
Last Friday's contest at Lake Superior was a game of streaks. LSSU led 1-0 after one, but BG rebounded with four second period goals in a span of 9:23. The Lakers scored twice before the end of the middle stanza and added three more in the first 10:20 of the third period for a 6-4 lead. Austin de Luis scored at 13:42 pulling BG to within one at 6-5, but LSSU added an power-play empty-net goal with one second left for a 7-5 win.
Adam Edinger led BG with one goal and two assists, while Tyler Knight chipped in with three assists. Other BG goal scorers were Ryan Fultz, Marc Barlow and Ryan Murphy.
BG starting goaltender Tom Lawson made 27 saves, while Tyler Masters stopped the only shot he faced in 8:48 of action. LSSU netminder Jayme Platt made 31 saves including 16 in the third period.
BG went zero-for-three on the power-play while LSSU scored on two of its six man-advantage chances.
The Falcons snapped their six-game losing streak with a 1-0 triumph at LSSU on Saturday. Sophomore left wing Austin de Luis scored a power-play goal 6:27 into the contest off assists from Adam Edinger and Grady Moore and freshman goalie Tyler Masters turned aside all 24 Laker shots for the win.
BG scored on one of its three power-play chances, while stopping all seven Laker power-play opportunities. LSSU goalie Jayme Platt stopped 13 shots.
FALCON TIDBITS ...
Tyler Masters shutout was the first by a BG goalie on the road since Dec. 7, 1997 at Michigan State when Shawn Timm stopped 42 Spartan shots in a 1-0 Bowling Green victory. Masters has not allowed a goal in his last 84:35.
Sophomore left wing Austin de Luis scored BG's fifth goal on Friday and only goal on Saturday increasing his season totals to three goals and four assists for seven points in 12 games. Last year in 34 games, de Luis had four goals and three assists for seven points. He has a four- game point-streak (2-2--4) dating back to Nov. 13.
Senior center Adam Edinger, who had three points (1-2) entering the LSSU series, had a goal and two assists on Friday and assisted on the game-winner on Saturday giving him two goals and five assists for seven points. He is currently tied with Bruce Newton (1975-79) and Sean Pronger (1990-94) for 55th place on the BG all-time points list with 106 points.
Sophomore defenseman Grady Moore, who has been on the ice for 19 of BG's 36 goals this year, has a three-game point-streak (1-2--3).
Sophomore blueliner Marc Barlow has a point in three of BG's last five games.
Freshman forward Ryan Fultz, who leads the BG forwards in plus/minus rating (+3), has a point in seven of his 12 games played. Senior defenseman B.J. Adams is also a +3.
The Falcons have been strong in the second period, outscoring their opponents 18-11. However, BG has been outscored 17-7 in the opening stanza and 22-11 (incudes three empty-net goals allowed) in the third period.
The BG power-play has scored on three of its last 14 chances during the last three games, after going one-for-24 in its previous four games.
Of BG's top four scorers, two are sophomores (Greg Day and Austin de Luis), one is a freshman (Ryan Fultz) and one is a junior (Ryan Murphy). BG's two member rookie class (Fultz and Tyler Knight) has combined for six goals and nine assists. The seven sophomores have recorded 16 goals and 21 assists, while the six member junior class has seven goals and 14 assists. The six seniors have totalled seven goals and 12 assists.
