BOWLING GREEN, OH - Bowling Green State University assistant football coaches Tim Walton and Bob Ligashesky have accepted positions at other universities. Walton, 28, will be the secondary coach at the University of Memphis. Ligashesky, 37, will coach defense at Boise State.
A 1995 graduate of Ohio State, Walton just completed his fourth season as a full-time coach under Gary Blackney. He worked with the secondary during the 1999 season, but was responsible for the running backs in his first three seasons as a coach. He served on the staff as a graduate assistant coach prior to being elevated to a full-time position.
Walton, a native of Columbus, Ga., will also be responsible for recruiting in the state of Georgia.
"It was a difficult decision for me, because I have been with Coach Blackney for so long," said Walton. "He recruited me at Ohio State, I played for him, and then I started my career with him here at BGSU."
The prospect of returning to the south, however, and being closer to his family, was too enticing for Walton.
"I will be recruiting in the area where I'm from," said Walton. "This is a step up for me financially, as well."
Ligashesky just completed his ninth season on the BGSU staff. He coached the outside linebackers in the first seven years of his tenure at Bowling Green. The past two seasons, he served as an assistant head coach, overseeing the linebackers and special teams.
A 1985 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Ligashesky has coached in the Mid-American Conference for the past 11 years. Prior to coming to Bowling Green, the McKees Rocks, Pa., native coached the outside linebackers at Kent State for two seasons under head coach Dick Crum. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wake Forest in 1985. For the next two years, he was a graduate assistant at Arizona State where he worked with the outside linebackers and defensive line.
"It is a compliment to the university and to the football program that other people acknowledge the quality of our staff," said Blackney. "I appreciate what Tim and Bob have done for the program, and I wish them well."
