Falcon Icers Travel To Nebraska Omaha For Two-Game Series

The Bowling Green State University hockey team, after splitting with Northern Michigan this past weekend (7-4, 2-3), will have its final regular-season two-game road series this weekend. The Falcons travel to Omaha to face the CCHA's newest member, the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks. Face-off both nights at the Omaha Civic Auditorium is 8:05 p.m. Eastern.
UPCOMING GAMES ...
BG will play a home-and-home series against Miami. Friday's contest (Feb. 11) in BG starts at 7:35 p.m., while Saturday's rematch against the RedHawks will be the 1,200th non-exhibition contest in BGSU hockey history. Game time in Oxford is 7:05 p.m.
The Falcons will have four of their final six regular-season games at the BGSU Ice Arena beginning with the Feb. 18-19 home set against Notre Dame. Face-off both nights is set for 7:35 p.m.
THE COACH ...
Falcon mentor Buddy Powers moved into 84th place on the NCAA all-time win list with BG's victory over Union on Dec. 30. He trails Rube Bjorkman (RPI, New Hampshire, North Dakota - 63-78) by one victory and current New Hampshire coach Dick Umile and Walter Nelson (Middlebury, Union - '32-64) by two wins. There have been more than 725 NCAA men's collegiate head hockey coaches.
Powers has a 1-1-0 record against the Mavericks after BG split (4-2, 1-6) a non-conference series in Omaha last season (Jan. 2-3, 1999).
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green has a 1-1-0 mark in the all-time series against Nebraska Omaha. BG won 4-2 on Jan. 2, 1999, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium behind Dan Price's two goals and Zach Ham's game-winning goal. Falcon netminder Mike Savard made 30 saves, while UNO goalie Kendall Sidoruk was credited with 34 saves.
The Mavericks won the next night, 6-1, with James Chalmers tallying the game-winner. Adam Edinger scored the lone BG goal with Maverick Jason White scoring twice. Shawn Timm and Jason Piwko combined for 26 saves in the Falcon cage, while Jason Mitchell made 29 stops for UNO. Referee Roger Graff handed out 42 penalties for 162 minutes in the Sunday contest.
PREVIEWING NEBRASKA OMAHA ...
Nebraska Omaha moved into a sixth-place tie in the CCHA standings with a tie (5-5 OT) and a win (5-2) at Ferris State this past weekend. The Mavericks are currently 9-12-5 overall and have 19 points in the CCHA on a league record of 7-8-5.
In Friday's tie in Big Rapids, Dave Noel-Bernier had three points (2G, 1A), while junior center Allan Carr and Derek Reynolds each had a goal and two assists in Saturday's triumph.
UNO is led offensively by Allan Carr (10-14--24, 4 PPG, 3 GWG), senior wing Derek Reynolds (6-12--18), junior wing Jason White (6-9--15) and freshman defenseman Greg Zanon (2-13--15).
Sophomore Rodney McLeod (3-5-0, 2.91, .916) and senior Kendall Sidoruk (6-7-5, 3.53, .878) have both spent time in the UNO cage.
The Mavericks have scored 24 power-play goals in 160 chances (15.0%), while the UNO penalty killers have stopped 114 of its opponents 145 man-advantage opportunities (78.6%).
REVIEWING THE NORTHERN MICHIGAN SERIES ...
Bowling Green won for the fifth time in the last seven games upending eighth-ranked Northern Michigan, 7-4, Jan. 28 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Falcons equalled their longest win streak (three games) of the season, despite falling behind 1-0 just 90 seconds into the contest on a goal by Wildcat Mike Stutzel.
BG responded with four straight goals (two 5-on-5, one 5-on-4 power-play and one 4-on-5 short-handed) to take a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes. Freshman Ryan Fultz tied the game at one, while Ryan Murphy's first career short-handed goal put BG in front for good.
Adam Edinger scored a power-play goal to chase Wildcat starting goalie Dan Ragusett. Junior defenseman Louis Mass recorded his second collegiate goal and first in 61 games, when he bounced a shot from the redline past NMU's Duane Hoey with 3:44 remaining in the opening stanza. Greg Day's first of the game came unassisted early in the second period, but NMU would cut BG's lead to 5-2 at the 6:04 mark on a Roger Trudeau goal.
A skirmish took place at the 7:42 mark with all five skaters on each team receiving minors for roughing after the whistle. Wildcat Bryan Phillips was assessed an extra minor for roughing. At the same stoppage, NMU received a bench minor with Wildcat head coach Rick Comley also being assessed a 10-minute game misconduct.
Day's second of the night came during a BG power-play with 1:37 left in the middle stanza. Scott Hewson scored his fourth of the campaign at 8:26 of the third period to complete the BG scoring. NMU scored twice in the last nine minutes.
BG's Tyler Masters stopped 21 of NMU's 24 shots he faced in 52:18, while Shawn Timm, who played the first 7:42 of the second period in the BG cage, turned aside three of the four shots he faced. NMU starting goalie Dan Ragusett made seven saves on 10 shots in the first 10:11 of the contest. Duane Hoey played the final 49:49 and made 24 saves on 28 Falcon shots.
BG scored on two-of-11 man-advantage opportunities, while stopping all six Wildcat power-play chances.
The Falcons had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 loss to Northern Michigan on Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, NMU's Peter Michelutti scored a rebound goal at 3:35 for the only five-on-five goal of the contest. Wildcat Chad Theuer increased NMU's lead to 2-0 midway through the middle stanza with a power-play goal.
BG freshman Ryan Fultz put the Falcons on the board with a power-play goal just 34 seconds after Theuer's goal.
Falcon netminder Tyler Masters was pulled with 1:41 left in the third period, but J.P. Vigier's empty-net goal 24 seconds later proved to be the game-winning goal. Falcon senior center Adam Edinger scored a six-on-four power-play goal with 17 seconds left in regulation to pull BG to within one at 3-2, but the Falcons could not score the equalizer.
Masters made 34 saves on 36 shots in the Falcon cage, while Dan Ragusett made 19 saves while allowing two power-play goals for NMU.
FALCON NOTES ...
Bowling Green had stopped 18 straight opponent power-play chances before Chad Theuer scored midway through the second period on Saturday.
Since being stopped on its first power-play opportunity on Jan. 21 against Alabama-Huntsville, the Falcons have scored nine man-advantage goals in their last 40 chances (22.5%).
Freshman goaltender Tyler Masters has a record of 4-2 in his last six appearances with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
Rookie right wing Ryan Fultz extended his goal-scoring streak to four games with a lamp-lighter each night against Northern Michigan. He has five goals and three assists for eight points in his last seven contests.
Sophomore center Greg Day had his fourth three-point game of the season in Friday's win over the Wildcats with two goals and an assist. He extended his assist streak to four games with a "helper" on Saturday. Day has three goals and five assists for eight points in his last four games.
After scoring four goals in the first 19 games of the season, senior center Adam Edinger has tallied four goals, including three on the power play, in the last four games. Edinger, who led the nation in power-play goals last season, did not score a PPG this year until Jan. 21.
Sophomore wing Austin de Luis had one assist on Friday and two assists on Saturday increasing his season total to 11. He has 16 points this year, after recording seven points in his initial season on four goals and three assists.
Bowling Green has at least one power-play goal in eight of its last nine games. The Falcons are 5-3 in the eight games they have scored a man-advantage marker.
Bowling Green has recorded a 3-5 mark against the current top five teams in the CCHA. The Falcons are 2-1 at home with wins over Michigan and Northern Michigan. BG is 1-4 on the road with the lone triumph coming at Lake Superior. Bowling Green still has a home-and-home series against Michigan (Mar. 3-4) and two home contests versus Notre Dame (Feb. 18-19).
BG is currently 4-6 against teams currently in sixth through 12th place. The Falcons are 3-3 at home with wins over Ohio State and Alaska Fairbanks (twice), while recording a 1-3 mark away from the BGSU Ice Arena. The lone road victory came at Western Michigan. Bowling Green visits Nebraska Omaha for two games this weekend, before facing Miami in a home-and-home series the following weekend (Feb. 11-12). The Falcons conclude February with a home-and-home series against Ohio State (Feb. 25-26).
FULTZ NAMED CCHA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK ...
Bowling Green freshman right wing Ryan Fultz has been selected as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week after recording two goals and one assist in the Falcons split with eighth- ranked Northern Michigan.
Fultz started the BG rally in Friday's contest with a goal at the 4:25 mark of the first period that tied the game at one. He also had an assist on Greg Day's second period power-play goal, after Northern Michigan had cut the Falcon lead to 5-2.
After falling behind 2-0 in Saturday's middle stanza, Fultz put BG on the board just 34 seconds after NMU's second goal.
Fultz was on the ice for five of BG's nine goals on the weekend.

APPROACHING MILESTONES ...
Nearing #400: Bowling Green has won 397 regular- season CCHA contests, the most of any school in the league. Michigan State is second at 382, Lake Superior is third at 378, while Michigan is the only other school with more than 300. The Wolverines total is 329.
Nearing #1,200: Bowling Green will play its 1,200th varsity non-exhibition contest on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Miami. The Falcons have recorded an all-time mark of 673-464-59 for a .587 winning percentage.
