Bowling Green, Ohio -
Bowling Green State University senior Melissa Lewis (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) has been named the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Lewis, who shares the award with Western Michigan's Jen Nowak, earns P-O-W honors for the second time in her Falcon career. Lewis was the outright offensive player of the week two weeks ago (Oct. 11).
Lewis, a left-side hitter, led the Falcons (14-8 overall, 7-3 MAC) to a perfect 3-0 week, with road wins over Oakland, Kent and Akron. On the week, she led the team in kills (56), kills per game (4.67) and digs (38).
Lewis had 15 kills against both Oakland and Kent, and totalled 26 kills in the win at Akron. In that win, BGSU lost the first two games to the East Division-leading Zips, then rallied to win the next three games.
BGSU has won eight consecutive matches, the team's longest win streak since the 1992 season. During that time, Lewis has hit .340 with 4.94 kills per game.
On the season, Lewis is hitting a team-best .295, and she leads the MAC with 4.60 kills per game. Lewis also leads the team in service aces and is second in digs per game. She has paced the Falcons in kills in 19 of this season's 22 matches.
The Falcons return home for a Wednesday (Oct. 27) contest against Eastern Michigan (13-8 overall, 5-5 MAC). That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
