CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of Bowling Green State University volleyball players have captured the Mid-American Conference's weekly awards, the league office has announced. Redshirt sophomore Kristin Gamby (Mt. Victory, Ohio/Marion Elgin) was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while junior Caty Rommeck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) shared the league defensive honor.
Rommeck's award marks the fourth time in seven weeks this season that she has earned a league accolade, and the third time on the defensive side. Gamby earns a conference P-O-W award for the first time in her Falcon career.
Gamby, a middle hitter/blocker, helped the Falcons to a pair of home wins last weekend. She set career highs with 15 kills and a .458 hitting percentage in Friday's (Oct. 13) three-game win over Buffalo, then broke those marks in Saturday's (Oct. 14) four-game victory against Northern Illinois. In that NIU match, Gamby hit .524 with 26 kills.
After entering the weekend with a career total of 20 kills, Gamby had 41 in the two matches. She hit .500 with a whopping 5.86 kills-per-game average on the weekend, and also set career highs in digs (five) and blocks (four) in the NIU match.
Rommeck, also a middle hitter/blocker, averaged 2.57 digs and 2.14 blocks in the two wins. She had six total blocks vs. UB, and had nine rejections against NIU. In that latter match, she narrowly missed a triple-double, posting 18 kills and 14 digs vs. the Huskies. On the weekend, Rommeck hit .400 and averaged 4.29 kills per game. She continues to lead the MAC in blocks, averaging 1.53 bpg this season. Rommeck shared this week's defensive award with Ball State's Megan Hammons.
The Falcons have had at least one player of the week in five of the season's first seven weeks. Freshman Susie Norris (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) earned league defensive P-O-W honors on Sept. 5 for her play in the season's first weekend, while Rommeck captured the defensive award in each of the next two weeks. On Oct. 2, Rommeck was the offensive winner, while Norris again earned the defensive honor.
The Falcons (11-7 overall, 4-5 MAC) of head coach Denise Van De Walle will play a pair of home matches this week, beginning with Wednesday's (Oct. 18) contest vs. East Division-leading Ohio. Then, BGSU will host Eastern Michigan Friday (Oct. 20), with both matches set for a 7:00 p.m. start at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
