CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore Kristin Gamby (Mt. Victory, Ohio/Marion Elgin) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office has announced. Gamby, a middle hitter/blocker on the Falcon volleyball team, earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Gamby won the MAC award after helping the Falcons to a pair of home wins last weekend. She set career highs with 15 kills and a .458 hitting percentage in Friday's (Oct. 13) three-game win over Buffalo, then broke those marks in Saturday's (Oct. 14) four-game victory against Northern Illinois. In that NIU match, Gamby hit .524 with 26 kills.
After entering the weekend with a career total of 20 kills, Gamby had 41 in the two matches. She hit .500 with a whopping 5.86 kills-per-game average on the weekend, and also set career highs in digs (five) and blocks (four) in the NIU match.
Gamby has a 3.37 cumulative grade point average as a pre-accounting major. Earlier on Tuesday (Oct. 17), she was named the MAC's Offensive Player of the Week.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female each week. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and have performed well during the past week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
BGSU volleyball players have won the MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week award in two of the last three weeks (Amber Vorst, Oct. 3), and the Falcons have garnered three of the last four awards (women's soccer sophomore Erika Flanders won the award on Sept. 26).
The Falcons (11-7 overall, 4-5 MAC) of head coach Denise Van De Walle will play a pair of home matches this week, beginning with Wednesday's (Oct. 18) contest vs. East Division-leading Ohio. Then, BGSU will host Eastern Michigan Friday (Oct. 20), with both matches set for a 7:00 p.m. start at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
