BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team picked up a point on the road, earning a 1-1 tie against the University at Buffalo Friday (Oct. 20). The Mid-American Conference match was held at UB's RAC Field.
For the Falcons, senior Michelle Lisy scored the Falcons' lone goal in the double-overtime match. Lisy's "clinically executed goal", according to BG head coach Andy Richards, came with just 10:43 left in the second half. Lisy beat UB goalkeeper Emily Cox with a shot that was low and to the 'keeper's left.
The Falcon lead was short-lived, however, as UB's Elizabeth Pfeffer scored with 7:48 left in regulation. The goal, which trickled just inside the post, was assisted by Nicole Olszewski.
The teams battled through the remainder of regulation as well as 30 minutes of overtime, but could not get another ball past Cox or BGSU goalkeeper Erika Flanders. The tie was the first for both teams this year.
The Bulls had a slim 15-14 edge in shots, and UB held a 4-3 margin in shots on goal. Flanders was credited with three saves in the Falcon net, while Cox had two saves for the hosts.
BGSU had seven corner kicks to UB's three.
"We had a fantastic performance, probably one of the performances of the season from our girls," said Richards. "We played with a lot of heart, but also with a lot of composure and intensity.
"We have several good chances to win the game, and perhaps are kicking ourselves because we didn't execute when we could have.
"Having said that, we played against a very good Buffalo team who before today were well in contention for winning the conference.
"And, it gives us a lot of confidence for the playoffs. We have had some very good performances on the road this year, and it looks like that's where we will be for the playoffs."
The Falcons are now 7-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in MACaction. Buffalo, which entered Friday action in a first-place tie in the league, is now 11-5-1 and 7-2-1, respectively.
The Bulls, with the tie, moved into sole possession of first place in the MAC, after Miami was defeated by Eastern Michigan Friday. The Bulls will enter Sunday, the final day of the MAC regular season, with 22 points, followed by both Miami and EMU with 21.
The Falcons will enter Sunday's (Oct. 22) match at Kent State in a tie for sixth place in the league, with 16 points. BGSU is deadlocked with Western Michigan, two points behind both Central Michigan and Ohio.
BGSU's match at KSU is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will complete the regular season with a pair of non-league home matches against Wisconsin-Green Bay (Oct. 27, 1:00 p.m.) and Michigan State (Oct. 29, 1:00 p.m.). The MAC Tournament begins Tuesday, Oct. 31, with quarterfinal matches at campus sites.
