AKRON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a four-game win over the host University of Akron Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28). The Falcons won the Mid-American Conference match (15-8, 15-6, 14-16, 15-5) at UA's Rhodes Arena.
With the victory, the Falcons move past UA into second place in the MAC's East Division. BGSU, now 14-8 overall, improved to 7-6 in MAC play. Akron falls to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in league action. The Falcons are two-and-a-half games behind division-leading Ohio University (10-4 in MAC matches).
For the Brown and Orange, junior Caty Rommeck led the Falcons with 20 kills and a hitting percentage of .432. Rommeck also had a total of eight blocks, including three solo rejections.
Freshman Susie Norris had 19 kills, while sophomore Kristin Gamby added 15 kills for the victorious Brown and Orange.
Defensively, Norris had a whopping 28 digs, her second-highest total of the year. She had 30 digs in a five-game win over Cincinnati (Sept. 2).
The win avenged a UA win at Anderson Arena last month (Sept. 23) and moved BGSU's series lead over the Zips to 15-8. The Falcons are now 7-3 all-time in road matches vs. Akron, and BG has captured four of the last five contests at Rhodes Arena.
Interestingly, the road team has won eight of the last nine (and nine of the last 11) matches in the BGSU-UA series.
The Falcons will return home for a Friday (Nov. 3) match vs. arch-rival Toledo, before loading up the bus for a Saturday (Nov. 4) contest at Marshall. Start time for each match is 7:00 p.m.
