BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after a pair of setbacks at home last weekend, will stay busy with three matches this week. The Falcons (5-5-0 overall, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) will step outside of league play with a Wednesday match at Wright State University (6-5-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at WSU's Alumni Field in Dayton.
Following the WSU contest, the Falcons of first-year head coach Andy Richards will return home for four consecutive MAC matches at Cochrane Field, beginning with a Friday (Oct. 6) tilt against Miami University (6-4-0, 4-1 MAC). That match will begin at 3:00 p.m. BGSU then plays a Sunday (Oct. 8) contest against Ball State University (4-6-2, 0-4-1 MAC), with starting time set for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane. The BSU match will conclude a stretch in which the Falcons played five contests in a 10-day span.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS: Andy Richards is in his first year as a head coach, and has a 5-5-0 record heading into the WSU match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April.
Ashlee Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August.
THE OPPONENTS: Wright State enters the week with a 6-5-0 overall record, and the Raiders are 1-1 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. WSU opened MCC action by splitting a pair of home matches last weekend, with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay Friday (Sept. 29). The Raiders saw a four-match win streak come to an end with Sunday's (Oct. 1) 2-0 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. WSU is now 3-2 at home this year, and the Raiders are 2-1 against MAC schools to date, with wins over Ohio and Western Michigan and an overtime loss to Central Michigan. Kristen Hanks leads the team with 10 points this year, while Sharon Roscoe has nine. Each player has four goals this season, and Alicia Bailey has a team-best five assists. Last year, WSU finished 11-9-1 overall. After going 4-1-0 in MCC regular-season action, the Raiders won the league tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Fourth-year head coach Scott Rodgers has a record of 33-37-4 as a collegiate mentor, all with WSU. More information on the team can be found at www.wsuraiders.com.
Miami is 6-4-0 this fall, and the RedHawks will head to BGSU with a 4-1 MAC record. MU won a pair of home matches last weekend, with a 3-1 win over Marshall Friday followed by a 3-2 overtime victory vs. Ohio Sunday. The RedHawks are 3-2-0 both at home and on the road in 2000. Andrea Cunningham paces the team with nine goals and 21 points after scoring two goals vs. Marshall and all three goals against OU. A year ago, the RedHawks posted a 17-3-1 record, and placed third in the MAC with a league mark of 8-3-0. Head coach Bobby Kramig, 35-28-4 in his fourth year as MU's head women's coach, is 53-31-4 in his fifth year as a collegiate women's coach. More information on the team can be found at www.MURedHawks.com.
Ball State brings a 4-6-2 overall record into the week, and the Cardinals are 0-4-1 in MAC action heading into Friday's match at Toledo. BSU has struggled since beginning the season with a 4-0 record. Last weekend, the Cardinals lost a pair of home matches, to Ohio Friday, 4-0, and to Marshall by a 3-0 count on Sunday. BSU is 0-3-1 in road contests this fall. Eileen Weinheimer leads the team with six goals and 16 points, while Alicia Jo Kalafut has a team-high five assists. Last year, BSU was 1-17-1 in the school's first season of varsity women's soccer, and the Cards went 0-10-1 in MAC play. Head coach Ron Rainey, 5-23-3 in his second year in Muncie, is 25-36-7 in his fourth year as a collegiate head coach. More information on BSU can be accessed at www.bsu.edu/sports.
THE SERIES: The Falcons trail Miami, 3-0-0, in the all-time series between the schools, and the RedHawks won the only previous meeting at Cochrane Field, a 2-1 overtime decision to end the 1998 regular season. MU's other wins - 3-2 in 1997 and 3-1 last Oct. 3 - both came in Oxford. Tracy Gleixner scored the Falcons' goal against the `Hawks two years ago, while Michelle Lisy found the back of the net in last season's meeting.
BGSU and Ball State battled to a 2-2 overtime tie last year (Oct. 1) in Muncie, the only previous series meeting. Jill Conover and Autumn Harris scored for the Falcons, with Janice Mentrup assisting on both goals.
The Falcons and Wright State have never met in women's soccer.
LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons opened the home portion of the 2000 schedule last weekend, and suffered a pair of MAC losses. On Friday (Sept. 29), Northern Illinois scored the first three goals of the match en route to a 4-2 win. Beth Wechsler converted a penalty kick, and Michelle Lisy scored to cut the NIU lead to 3-2 with 12 minutes left. But, a late NIU goal sealed the win for the visitors.
BGSU got on the board first on Sunday (Oct. 1), as Mandy Smith's long shot early in the second half broke a scoreless tie vs. Western Michigan. But, the Broncos tied the contest just three minutes later, then netted the winning goal with 3:41 remaining in the contest to win by a 2-1 score.
