CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of Bowling Green State University volleyball players have swept the Mid-American Conference's weekly awards, the league office has announced. Junior Caty Rommeck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Susie Norris (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) earned the league defensive honor.
Rommeck's award marked the third time in five weeks that she earned a league accolade, and the first time on the offensive side. Norris earned the defensive award for the second time in her brief Falcon career.
Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, helped the Falcons to a pair of home wins last weekend. She had a hitting percentage of .416 in the two matches, and averaged 6.00 kills, 2.63 digs and 1.00 blocks per game on the weekend.
Rommeck hit .429 with a career-high 29 kills in Friday's (Sept. 29) five-game win over Kent State, then had a match-high 19 kills in a three-game victory over Marshall the following night. On the year, she is hitting .321 with 4.21 kills per game, leading the team in both categories. She continues to lead the league in blocks (1.60 bpg).
Norris, a left-side hitter, averaged nearly six digs per game last weekend, with match-high totals of 27 vs. KSU and 20 vs. Marshall. Her 47 total digs averaged out to 5.88 per game. Norris, who entered last weekend ranked fifth in the nation with 4.49 digs per game on the season, has increased that average to a whopping 4.71.
The Falcons have had at least one player of the week in four of the season's first five weeks. Norris earned league defensive P-O-W honors on Sept. 5 for her play in the season's first weekend, while Rommeck captured the defensive award in each of the next two weeks.
The Falcons (9-4 overall, 2-2 MAC) of head coach Denise Van De Walle will play three road matches this week, beginning with Wednesday's (Oct. 4) contest at Toledo. Then, BGSU will play at Western Michigan Friday (Oct. 6) and at Central Michigan the following night. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
