CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of Bowling Green State University volleyball players have captured the Mid-American Conference's weekly awards, the league office has announced. Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou (Rock Island, Ill./Pleasant Valley [Iowa]) shared the MAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week award, while junior Caty Rommeck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) earned the league defensive honor.
Rommeck's award marks the fifth time in this season that she has earned a league accolade (a school record), and the fourth time on the defensive side. Papageorgiou earns a conference P-O-W award for the first time in her Falcon career.
Papageorgiou, a middle/right-side hitter, and Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, helped the Falcons to three wins last week, including road wins against Miami and Ohio to lift BGSU into a tie for the MAC's East Division lead.
Papageorgiou hit .402 in the three matches, with 4.36 kills per game, to lead the team in both categories. She also had 2.64 digs and 1.91 blocks per game on the week. "Pop" led BGSU in kills in two of the three matches, and trailed Rommeck's total by one kill in the Miami match. She missed a triple-double by two blocks in that MU match, then missed a triple-double by just a single block the following night vs. Ohio.
Rommeck averaged 2.90 digs and 1.90 blocks last week, and hit .350 with 3.80 kills on the offensive side. In the two MAC wins, she had 2.38 blocks and three digs per game. Rommeck had a career-high 12 total blocks in the win at Miami, and her five solo blocks in that match tied her career best. She hit a match-high .474 in a win against her former team, Oakland University. Rommeck had her second triple-double of the year in the Miami contest, with 19 kills and 12 digs (and the 12 blocks).
The Falcons have had at least one player of the week in six of the season's first 11 weeks. In addition to Rommeck's five honors this season, freshman Susie Norris (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) has twice earned league defensive P-O-W honors this year. Also, redshirt sophomore Kristin Gamby (Mt. Victory, Ohio/Marion Elgin) was the offensive winner on Oct. 16, prior to Papageorgiou's honor today.
The Falcons (19-8 overall, 11-6 MAC) of head coach Denise Van De Walle enter the final week of the regular season. BGSU will play a Wednesday (Nov. 15) non-conference match at Cleveland State, then will head to Buffalo Saturday (Nov. 18). A win at UB would clinch a homecourt berth for the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round next week.
