SERIES HISTORY
Bowling Green leads the all-time series versus Alaska Fairbanks with a 13-7-2 record. The Falcons have compiled a 5-3-1 mark in Fairbanks, including a 1-1-1 record in the last three contests at the Carlson Center with two games going into overtime. BG won its first four games at UAF, but is 1-3-1 since. The Falcons have a 4-0-1 mark in the last five meetings since a 4-3 UAF overtime win on Feb. 12, 1999.
PREVIEWING ALASKA FAIRBANKS
The Nanooks are coming off a split at Michigan. The Wolverines won 8-0 on Friday before UAF rebounded with a 5-2 victory on Saturday.
In Saturday's triumph, UAF scored two times in the first 10 minutes of the third period to snap a 2-2 deadlock. Nanook Tom Herman was credited with the first goal of the game when a blocked Michigan shot went went into an empty Wolverine net as Michigan goalie Josh Blackburn was on the bench during the delayed penalty. Cam Keith scored in the second period, while Daniel Carriere scored the game-winner short-handed. Bobby Andrews added a power-play goal and Ryan Reinheller's empty-net marker sealed the UAF win. Preston McKay made 33 saves for the Nanooks.
The Nanooks are led in scoring by senior forward Jim Lawrence (4-8--12, 4 PPG), junior defenseman Daniel Carriere (4-5--9), freshman forward Tom Herman (3-4--7) and senior forward Ryan Reinheller (3-3--6). Sophomore Lance Mayes (1-4-2, 3.83, .876) and rookie Preston McKay (1-2-0, 3.03, .911) have shared time in the UAF cage for second-year head coach Guy Gadowsky.
REVIEWING THE OHIO STATE SERIES
BG rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime, but Ohio State's Pete Broccoli scored with 28.5 seconds left in the extra session to give the Buckeyes a 5-4 win Sunday afternoon.
BG's Marc Barlow scored his first goal of the campaign at the 12:04 mark of the opening period to tie the game at one. OSU's Jean-Francois Dufour scored during a Buckeye power play at 7:53 marking the ninth time in 10 games this season that BG had fallen behind 1-0.
Greg Day tallied his eighth of the year during a Falcon man-advantage 7:13 into the middle period. Barlow and Curtis Valentine assisted on Day's goal. The Buckeyes tied the game just 51 seconds later when R.J. Umberger scored his fourth of the season.
Dufour netted his second of the contest 3:08 into the third period and Miguel Lafleche added a short-handed goal at the 11:17 mark to give OSU a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Murphy scored a power-play goal at the 16:22 mark off assists from Scott Hewson and Kevin Bieksa to pull BG within one at 4-3.
Ryan Fultz scored his second goal in as many games with 43.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at four. Day earned his second point of the contest with the lone assist. Fultz's goal was scored just five seconds after Tyler Masters had left the ice for an extra skater.
Masters turned aside 33 shots including 15 in the opening period, while OSU netminder Mike Betz was credited with 19 saves. BG scored on two of its nine power-play chances, with the Buckeyes scoring on one of their four man-advantage opportunities.
The Falcons recorded a number of season firsts in Saturday's 5-2 triumph at Ohio State.
The Falcons scored the first goal of the game for the first time this year, freshman Mark Wires scored his first collegiate goal, and junior Scott Hewson tallied his first two collegiate power-play markers while also recording his first multiple-goal game.
Hewson scored the lone goal of the opening period when he banged in a shot by freshman blueliner Kevin Bieksa during a five-on-three Falcon power play. Junior defenseman Grady Moore earned the second assist on the first goal of the game.
BG went ahead 2-0 just 45 seconds into the middle stanza when Greg Day finished off a two-on-one by going five hole on Ohio State netminder Mike Betz. Curtis Valentine and Bieksa assisted on Day's seventh of the campaign.
OSU made it 2-1 at the 9:48 mark of the second period when Dave Steckel scored just after a BG penalty expired.
Bowling Green increased its lead to two at 3-1 when Mark Wires scored with 40.4 seconds left in the second period. Hewson and Ryan Wetterberg assisted on Wires first collegiate lamp-lighter.
BG started the third period scoring as Hewson netted his second man-advantage marker at the 4:27 mark off assists from Ryan Murphy and D'Arcy McConvey.
The Buckeyes scored a power-play goal at the 6:10 mark as Paul Caponigri redirected a point shot by Doug Andress.
Ryan Fultz completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 58.8 seconds left in the contest. Wetterberg intercepted an OSU neutral zone pass and fed Fultz for the 90-foot shot.
OSU outshot BG 35-19, but Falcon sophomore goalie Tyler Masters made 33 saves including 15 in the decisive second period. OSU goalie Mike Betz was credited with 14 saves. BG converted two of five man-advantage opportunities, while the Buckeyes scored on one of their seven power play chances.
FALCON TIDBITS
BG will conclude its six-game month-long road trip this weekend at Alaska Fairbanks. The Falcons will play the first four games in December at home before hitting the road for six consecutive contests.
BG scored first in Saturday's game marking the initial time this season the Falcons had taken a 1-0 lead in a contest.
Freshman blueliner Kevin Bieksa had three assists against Ohio State after recording two helpers in his first seven games.
The Falcons have scored eight power play goals in their last 25 chances (32%), after scoring four times in their first 45 opportunities.
Junior center Greg Day had a goal each game at Ohio State giving him eight goals in the last seven games.
After having one goal in the first eight games, sophomore right wing Ryan Fultz scored BG's last goal of the game in both contests in Columbus. His empty-net goal on Saturday sealed a Falcon win, while his marker with 43.9 seconds left in regulation on Sunday sent the game into overtime.
BG has scored 13 goals in the last three games (1-1-1) after scoring 10 goals in the first seven games.
Only 10 players have seen action in all eight contests this season. BG has already missed 18 man-games due to injuries.
BG is 1-3-0 on Friday's, 1-1-2 on Saturday's and 0-2-0 on Sunday's. The Falcons are 2-3-2 when scoring a power play goal and 2-1-1 when scoring at least two man-advantage markers. The Falcons are 1-1-0 when outshooting an opponent and 1-5-2 when outshot.
BG has had 29 or fewer shots on goal in nine of the 10 contests this year compiling a 2-5-2 mark in those games.
