FALCON TIDBITS
The Falcons started a stretch this past weekend in which they will play 12 of 16 games away from the BGSU Ice Arena. BG has six road games in November, four consecutive home games in early December then start another six-game road trip over the holidays.
BG is 1-1-2 in its last four games in part to improved discipline. The Falcons were assessed 41 penalties (10.25 per game) in the first four games (all losses), but have only 28 penalties (7.0 per game) the last four games.
BG scored a season-high three power-play goals in Saturday's tie at NMU. Over the last three contests, the Falcons have scored on five of 20 man-advantage opportunities (25%), after going 3 for 36 (8%) in the first five games. BG has allowed at least one power-play goal in every game this year.
BG had 40 shots on goal in Friday's 2-1 setback, surpassing the previous season-best of 28 early in the third period.
The Falcons have not scored the first goal of a game in any contest this year.
Only 10 of the 20 goals allowed by sophomore netminder Tyler Masters have been even-strength goals (he has allowed nine power-play markers and one short-handed tally).
He has stopped 98 of the 105 shots (.933) he has faced over the last three games (nearly 190 minutes) compiling a 2.22 goals-against average in that time span.
Masters has started the last seven games in net for BG.
Freshman defenseman Brian Escobedo (1-3--4) and sophomore right wing Ryan Fultz (1-3--4) lead the squad in power-play points and power-play assists. Junior center Greg Day has a team-best two power-play goals, while six other skaters have one power-play goal each.
Day also has scored the team's lone short-handed marker.
After being held off the scoresheet in the first three games of the year, Day has recorded six goals in the last five contests including two multiple-goal affairs. Last season, Day had 13 goals after recording 10 lamp-lighters as a rookie.
Senior captain Doug Schueller returned to the lineup for last Friday's game at Northern Michigan. He had missed the first six games while recovering from off-season knee surgery.
Junior blueliner Marc Barlow equalled a career-best with two assists in Saturday's tie at Northern Michigan.
Senior left wing Curtis Valentine and junior defenseman Joe Statkus are tied for the team lead in plus/minus at +1.
Valentine and Fultz have a team-best five assists, while Valentine is nearly halfway to equalling a career-high in points. He had 15 points as a freshman, and 12 points as both a sophomore and last year. This year he has six points on one goal (game-tying versus Alaska Fairbanks) and five assists.
Fultz has five assists in eight games this year after recording 10 assists in 36 games a year ago.
Junior defenseman Grady Moore with 45 career points on 14 goals and 31 assists is nearing the 50-point plateau. Eleven of his collegiate goals have come on the power play.
