BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou had a match-high 15 kills as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a three-game win over Oakland University Tuesday (Nov. 7). The Falcons captured the non-conference contest (15-8, 15-13, 15-7) at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
Papageorgiou, one of two seniors on the BGSU squad, hit .464 as BGSU celebrated "Senior Night." Junior Caty Rommeck, one of two Oakland transfers on the Falcon team, hit a match-high .474 with 11 kills off the bench.
Freshman Susie Norris had 14 kills and a match-best 18 digs for the Falcons. BGSU had a hitting percentage of .299 to the Golden Grizzlies' .119, and the Falcons held sizeable advantages in both kills (61 to 32) and digs (67 to 47).
The Falcons, now 17-8 overall, scored the first five points of the night en route to an 11-3 lead in game one. During that run, the Falcons' two seniors -- Papageorgiou and Krista Davis -- combined for block assists twice. Papageorgiou led the Falcons with four blocks on the night, while Davis added three.
The Golden Grizzlies rallied to within 14-8 before BG closed out the first game.
OU broke out to leads of 3-0 and 6-2 in the second game, before the Falcons rallied. Sophomore Kristin Gamby had three-straight kills to bring BGSU to a 6-6 tie. The visitors scored the next three points, including two on service aces, to regain the lead. Moments later, however, with the Grizzlies leading, 10-8, the Falcons went on a 5-0 run. Three consecutive Oakland points then tied the match at 13-all, but kills by Norris and Gamby ended that contest.
In game three, the Falcons broke out to a 6-1 lead, and the Grizzlies never got closer than three points thereafter. A kill by Shyann Robinson, like Rommeck a transfer from Oakland, began an 8-1 BGSU run that made the score 14-4. After Oakland scored three consecutive points, freshman Laura Twyman ended the match. She got a kill for a BG sideout, then had the match-ending service ace.
The win enabled BGSU to end the home portion of the regular-season schedule with an 11-2 record at Anderson Arena. That win total marks the team's most home victories since the 1992 team went 12-1.
The Falcons got 45 assists and nine digs from junior setter Natalie Becker, while Davis also had nine digs on the night.
For Oakland, now 6-20 on the year, Carmen Trippett had 11 kills off the bench, while Lisa Matwijiw had 14 digs. Both Trippett and Tess Pierce had four total blocks apiece.
BGSU now leads the all-time series with Oakland by a 4-0 margin.
Overall, the Falcons have won the last four matches, and eight of the last nine contests. BGSU ends the home portion of the regular season with an eight-match win streak at Anderson.
The Falcons now begin a four-match road swing to end the regular season. BGSU will play a Friday (Nov. 10) match at Miami University before a Saturday (Nov. 11) contest against Mid-American Conference East Division-leading Ohio University. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.
