BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sasa Stubler had 28 points and five assists to lead visiting WBC Ilirija of Slovenia to a 74-60 over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday night (Nov. 8). The exhibition game was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
The Falcons held a 7-4 lead after sophomore Karen Stocz made her third and fourth free throws of the night with less than three minutes gone. But, four minutes later, a pair of Maja Drozg charity tosses broke a 10-10 tie, and the visitors never relinquished their advantage. WBC Ilirija took a 43-35 edge into intermission.
Stubler, who played all 40 minutes, hit 10 of her 13 shots from the floor to lead all scorers. Drozg chipped in with 20 points, and she had a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench.
As a team, the visitors held a 42-28 advantage on the boards.
BGSU struggled from the field all evening, shooting just 31.5 percent for the game. By contrast, WBC Ilirija shot 51.9% in the first half an 45.1% on the evening.
BGSU junior Francine Miller led three double-digit scorers with 14 points. Seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, while freshman Kelly Kapferer had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Each team had trouble holding on to the ball, as the visitors had 25 turnovers to BG's 24.
"I told the team I couldn't think of one thing we did well tonight," said BGSU head coach Dee Knoblauch. "The only good thing is that it was an exhibition game, and does not count against our record.
"We were out of synch on offense, we were not aggressive, and it doesn't help when it seems like no one can put the ball in the hoop.
"We did not seem to have any energy, intensity or emotion, and there is no excuse for that, ever.
"I kept expecting a spurt to get us going, and get the crowd pumped up, but it just never happened.
"Sasa Stubler is tough. She can shoot from the outside, and then she puts it on the floor and she's got that nice little runner. She killed us tonight.
"Hopefully, this (loss) will put the fire in our bellies, and get us ready to come out next time and erase the memory of this defeat."
Redshirt freshman Pam Brown made her first-ever game appearance for the Brown and Orange. Brown sat out last season, then missed the Falcons' first exhibition game on Nov. 1 due to illness.
The Falcons will open the season with a Nov. 18 contest against Youngstown State University. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson.
