THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, having broken a four-game losing streak over the weekend, faces a tough test tonight. The Falcons (3-5), still battling the injury bug, return home to take on The Ohio State University in a Tuesday (Dec. 12) contests. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena (5,000). The Falcons are hosting OSU for the first time in nearly 24 years.
Following the OSU game, the Falcons will conclude pre-Christmas action with a Saturday (Dec. 16) game against Wright State University. That contest is scheduled to begin at noon at WSU's Ervin J. Nutter Center (10,632). The WSU game is BG's last until a Dec. 28 contest at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 27-36. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 209-155 (.574). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 3-5 record on the season, and the Falcons snapped a four-game losing streak with an 83-73 win over Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9). That victory gave the Brown and Orange a 1-1 record and a second-place finish at the Arizona Basketball Classic in Tucson.
The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. Three days later (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. BGSU then split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic (Nov. 24-25), topping Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count, but losing to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, in the championship game. The Falcons dropped a home contest to Detroit, 94-75 (Dec. 2), and fell at St. Bonaventure, 87-85, on a layup at the buzzer (Dec. 5).
Last weekend, BGSU headed to Arizona and fell to the host Wildcats by a 99-43 count before rallying for the win over Fresno State.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and missed each of last week's three games. She likely will miss the Ohio State contest as well.
Junior Dana Western, after leading the Falcons in scoring last week, has moved up to second on the team, with 10.5 points per game. Senior Angie Farmer is the only other Falcon averaging in double digits, with 10.2 points per outing. Farmer, however, also missed each of last week's games due to injury, and will sit out the Ohio State contest.
The Falcons are 1-1 at Anderson Arena, 0-4 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year.
Sophomore Kim Griech (9.4 ppg), redshirt freshman Pam Brown (7.6 ppg), freshman Lindsay Austin (7.5 ppg) and senior Afra Smith (6.9 ppg) are close behind on the BGSU scoring chart. Sophomore Megan Jerome averages 5.1 points.
From long distance, a trio of Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Western has made 14 three-pointers in 28 attempts this year, while Farmer also is shooting .500 from behind the arc, having gone 10-of-20. Griech leads the team with 15 successful treys, and she is shooting .469 (15-of-32). Jerome has made seven of her 11 long-range shots (.636).
Overall, Brown is shooting a team-best .480 from the field, having made 24 shots in 50 attempts. Austin is shooting .463 (19-of-41) on the year.
Brown currently leads the team in rebounding (6.5 rpg), followed by Miller (5.8 rpg), Western (5.5 rpg) and freshman Kelly Kapferer (3.6 rpg). Austin leads the team with 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.8 assists to date. Western and Smith each average 1.4 steals, and Western paces the Falcons with six blocks on the year.

BGSU lost to host Arizona by a 99-43 score Friday (Dec. 8), but downed Fresno State, 83-73, the following day to finish second in the tourney ... on Friday, the Falcons fell behind by a 10-0 score, but still were within 11 points at 32-21 lat in the first half ... but, the Wildcats scored the next 13 points, then opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 55-25 lead ... the hosts kept pulling away ... for the Falcons, junior Dana Western had the first double-double of her career, with 11 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds ... sophomore Kim Griech added eight points ... the next day, BG rebounded to top Fresno State ... Western was named to the all-tournament team.
WESTERN SIZZLIN': Junior Dana Western had arguably the best week of her Falcon career last week ... Western led BGSU with 14.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the three contests, and also led the Brown and Orange in minutes played (31.0 avg.), three-point field-goal percentage (.591), steals (2.3 spg) and blocks (1.0) ... Western set some sort of career standard in each of the three contests ... she had a career-best 16 points at St. Bonaventure Tuesday (Dec. 5), then topped that mark with 17 points vs. Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9) ... in between, Western had her first career double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds (tying her career best) at Arizona ... she was named to the all-tournament team at the Arizona Basketball Classic.
SHORTHANDED: The Falcons played each of last week's three games without three starters ... junior Francine Miller and seniors Jackie Adlington and Angie Farmer missed the games due to injuries ... prior to last Tuesday, Miller had played in all 60 games since coming to BGSU, while Farmer had seen action in 51 consecutive contests.
INJURY REPORT: Junior Francine Miller suffered an injury to her right meniscus early in the first half of the Detroit game (Dec. 2) ... Miller missed each of last week's three games, and will remain sidelined at least through Saturday's Wright State contest ... senior guard Angie Farmer, at the time the team's second-leading scorer (behind Miller), has been hobbled with tendonitis in her foot for the past several weeks ... she also missed last week's contests and will be out this week as well ... senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the season-opening win over Youngstown State ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot and is expected to be sidelined for the entire non-conference portion of the schedule.
YOUNGSTERS: The Falcon roster boasts 15 players, but just 11 suited up last week ... those 11 included one senior, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of nine different players have made at least one start ... only two players, freshman Lindsay Austin and senior Afra Smith, have started all eight games this year.
63 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 63 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the first of her career ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
DOUBLE DIGITS: Sophomore Karen Stocz had 11 points in the win over Fresno State, for the first double-digit scoring game of her collegiate career ... Stocz became the 10th different player this year to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion ... a total of eight different players hit double digits in that category last year.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through eight games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.75 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game this season.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking charity tosses at a .733 clip (129-of-176) ... BGSU has slumped from the line as of late, shooting .523 (23-of-44) over the past few games ... BGSU shot .769 or better from the free-throw line in each of the first five games this year, shooting .803 (106-of-132) during that time ... this year, the Falcons are making 16.1 free throws per game after averaging 12.1 last year.
DIFFERENT PLAYERS STEPPING UP: Through eight games this season, a total of eight different players have led or tied for the BGSU scoring lead at least once ... as mentioned earlier, 10 different players have had at least one double-digit scoring game this year ... junior Dana Western leads the way with six double-digit efforts, while freshman Lindsay Austin, redshirt frosh Pam Brown and junior Francine Miller each have three.
GOOD SHOOTING: The Falcons shot over .500 from the field twice in last week's three games, and have made over half their shots three times through eight games ... BGSU shot over .500 only three times during all of last season ... BGSU is 2-1 in such games this year after posting the identical record last year.
GRIECH WAS GREAT: Sophomore Kim Griech made her first three starts of the year last week, and responded in a big way ... Griech led the Falcons in three-point field goals made last week, sinking nine in 18 attempts ... she also paced the Falcons with 4.0 assists per game, and was second in scoring, with 13.3 points per outing ... Griech had a career-high 17 points vs. Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9), and also set career standards by sinking five treys and dishing out six assists in that game.
STOCZ STELLAR: Sophomore Karen Stocz had the best game of her Falcon career in the win over Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9) ... Stocz scored a career-high 11 points, all in the second half ... several of her baskets stopped Fresno scoring runs, including back-to-back buckets after the Bulldogs had cut the lead to just three points ... her second basket in that stretch came with just one second remaining on the shot clock ... in addition to scoring, Stocz set career bests in rebounds and steals, with seven and three, respectively.
BROWN HITS FOR 22: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown has asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with in her first eight games ... Brown led the team in field-goal percentage last week, shooting .591 from the field (13-of-22) ... she had a season-best 22 points at St. Bonaventure ... Brown made 11 of her 14 shots from the floor, for a success rate of 78.6%, and added a team-high seven rebounds in the game ... despite playing just 19.7 minutes per game last week, Brown was second on the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and third in scoring (10.0 ppg) ... Brown has led or tied for team rebounding honors five times this year.
THE "THREE'S" KEEP COMING: The Falcons, despite playing without two players (Angie Farmer and Francine Miller) ranked second and third, respectively, in career three-point field-goal percentage, still were deadly from behind the arc last week ... BGSU averaged 7.33 treys per game last week and shot .449 (22-of-49) from long range ... the main perpetrators were junior Dana Western (.591, 8-of-14) and sophomore Kim Griech (.500, 9-of-18) ... with their success from long range this season, both Western and Griech are also among the BGSU career top-10 in three-point accuracy.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BGSU's win over Charleston Southern (Nov. 24) ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament.
DOUBLE TROUBLE, PART TWO (AND THREE): Redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in the win over Charleston Southern ... Brown's totals of 12 points and 12 rebounds were the best of her brief career in each category ... she topped her point total with 13 vs. Detroit ... junior Dana Western had the first double-double of her Falcon tenure against Arizona, with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two years, BGSU's totals are nearly 60 percent of the totals during those first 12 years ... Knoblauch's teams made 394 treys in 1,110 tries over the first two years (see graphic on page 3).
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance -- both school records -- in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons hit double digits for the first time in 2000-01, making 11 treys in the win over Charleston Southern ... the Falcons made at least eight triples in four of the next five games.
BLOCK PARTY: After blocking a total of 39 shots (1.39 per game) last year, the Falcons already have blocked 22 shots this year ... BGSU is averaging 2.75 blocks per game.
FIRST TITLE GAME IN A WHILE...: The Falcons advanced to the championship game of the Kroger Classic at Auburn (Nov. 24-25) ... that marked the first time that Bowling Green advanced to the championship contest of an in-season tournament since the 1992-93 season ... that year, the Falcons advanced to the championship game of the Boilermaker Classic before losing by three points to host Purdue ... BGSU has not won an in-season tourney since capturing the Illini Classic during the 1988-89 campaign ... it should be noted, however, that the Falcons have won the Mid-American Conference Tournament four times during that stretch.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin has started each of the first eight games ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, has seen her share of action, though ... Austin is averaging 26.0 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 16.3.
BGSU WINS HOME OPENER, AGAIN: The Falcons kept a rather impressive streak going in the Youngstown State game ... BGSU has now captured 12 of the last 13 home openers ... the only loss among the last 13 home-opening contests came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, in 1996.
JEROME HITS VS. AUBURN: Sophomore Megan Jerome had the best game of her Falcon career at Auburn (Nov. 25) ... Jerome scored 18 points to tie for team honors ... she had 16 points in the second half vs. the nationally-ranked Lady Tigers ... Jerome hit all four of her shots from the field, including a 3-for-3 performance from three-point land ... she went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line ... Jerome's previous career scoring high was nine points, set on two occasions last season ... she also had five rebounds in the game, just one off her career high in that department.
1999-2000 FALCONS ENJOY LATE-SEASON SUCCESS: BGSU is looking to build upon the success enjoyed late last season ... after going nearly all year without winning back-to-back games, the Falcons had a 6-16 overall record (and a 4-8 MAC mark, tied for the 11th seed) on Valentine's Day ... the Brown and Orange rallied to win five consecutive games, including road wins against Akron and Buffalo to close the regular season, winding up in a deadlock for fifth place overall ... BG capped off the win streak with a victory over Ohio in the MAC Tournament First Round, before seeing the season come to an end with a quarterfinal loss to Western Michigan ... the Falcons ended the year with an overall record of 11-17, and BGSU went 8-8 in MAC regular-season play.
MILLER ON PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM: Junior Francine Miller was named to the preseason All-MAC Team in October ... voting for the five-player team was conducted by members of the MAC News Media Association.
HONORS ARE NOTHING NEW FOR MILLER, THOUGH: Junior Francine Miller heads a cast of eight returning letterwinners for the Brown and Orange in 2000-2001 ... last year, Miller became just the second sophomore in school history to earn all-league first-team laurels, joining Jackie Motycka in that exclusive club.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games.
ANDER-RIFFIC! In eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games, having made 94 treys in 204 attempts ... the Falcons made at least eight triples in each game, and drained 67 in the last five home contests combined ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round game against Ohio, the Falcons were 102-of-223 (.457) from long range against league foes at Anderson.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Before Dee Knoblauch returned to campus, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... Knoblauch's first team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts.
FARMER FIRES FOR THREE: Last year, as a junior, Angie Farmer shattered the BGSU seasonal records for three-pointers made and attempted ... Farmer sank 78 treys in 186 attempts last winter, and her .419 success rate ranked sixth on that BGSU single-season list ... four players - Farmer, Francine Miller (43, fifth), Sherry Kahle (42, sixth) and Jaymee Wappes (39, eighth) - cracked the BG season list for three-pointers made.
MILLER MAKES 'EM, TOO: While Farmer was setting the single-season school record for three-pointers made last year, Francine Miller was setting the three-point percentage mark ... Miller's .453 success rate from behind the arc (43-of-95) broke the previous record of .439, set by Farmer in the 1998-99 campaign.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.428, 121-of-283), while junior Francine Miller is third (.411, 81-of-197) ... sophomore Kim Griech has moved up to fourth on that list (.398, 41-of-103), while junior Dana Western has moved into eighth place (.373, 38-of-102) ... Farmer is in second place all-time with 121 three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth with 81 ... Farmer is second with 283 career three-point attempts, while Miller is seventh with 197 triple tries.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BGSU seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith have been chosen as team captains for the 2000-2001 season.
