THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after a lengthy break for exams and the holidays, returns to action with the final game of the 2000 calendar year. The Falcons (4-6) will take on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a Thursday (Dec. 28) contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. locally (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time) at UWM's Klotsche Center (5,000).
Following the UWM game, the Falcons will return home to open the new millennium and the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule. The Brown and Orange will host Akron at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000) on Wed., Jan. 3, 2001. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 28-37. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 210-156 (.574). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 4-6 record on the season, and the Falcons ended the pre-holiday schedule with a 56-52 road win over Wright State (Dec. 16). Senior Afra Smith tied her BGSU career high with 20 points in the victory. For the fifth game in a row, the Falcons played without three starters, all of whom missed the game due to injury.
The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. Three days later (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. BGSU then split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic (Nov. 24-25), topping Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count, but losing to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, in the championship game. The Falcons dropped a home contest to Detroit, 94-75 (Dec. 2), and fell at St. Bonaventure, 87-85, on a layup at the buzzer (Dec. 5).
Then, BG headed to Arizona and fell to the host Wildcats by a 99-43 count before rallying for an 83-73 win over Fresno State. That victory gave the Brown and Orange a 1-1 record and a second-place finish at the Arizona Basketball Classic in Tucson.
BG dropped a 95-49 decision to undefeated Ohio State before beating Wright State.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and missed the next five games. She will suit up and could make her return in the UWM contest.
Senior Angie Farmer is the only other Falcon averaging in double digits, with 10.2 points per outing. Farmer, however, also has missed the last five games due to injury, and likely will sit out the UWM game as well. Farmer is scheduled to be in uniform for the Jan. 3 Akron contest.
Sophomore Kim Griech has moved into third place on the team with 9.0 points per game, while junior Dana Western is fourth at 8.8 points per contest. Griech and Western have picked up the three-point shooting load in the absence of Farmer and Miller. Griech leads the team with 19 treys made, while Western has drained 14 long-distance shots this year.
Senior Afra Smith is averaging 8.7 points per game, with freshman Lindsay Austin (7.8) and redshirt frosh Pam Brown (7.1 ppg) close behind.
The Falcons are 1-2 at Anderson Arena, 1-4 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year.

Additionally, sophomore Megan Jerome has made seven of her 12 long-range shots (.583) this year.
Overall, Brown is shooting a team-best .468 from the field, having made 29 shots in 62 attempts. Austin and Smith are shooting .466 and .459, respectively, on the year.
Brown currently leads the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg), followed by Miller and Western (5.8 rpg apiece) and freshman Kelly Kapferer (3.1 rpg). Austin leads the team with 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.8 assists to date. Western averages 1.3 steals and paces the team with 11 blocks on the year (1.1 bpg).

BG is shooting .394 from three-point range and averaging 6.9 triples per game, while the foes have shot .316 from behind the arc.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING UW-MILWAUKEE: UW-Milwaukee will check into the BGSU game with a 3-4 record ... the Panthers, 3-0 at home and 0-4 on the road this year, have won two consecutive games, holding both opponents under 50 points ... 12/7/92 at BGSU 88, UW-Milwaukee 69 12/23/93 BGSU 83, at UW-Milwaukee 62
WENZEL FAMILY REUNION: The game at UW-Milwaukee will mark a homecoming of sorts for Falcon freshman Stefanie Wenzel ... Wenzel is a native of Sussex, Wis. ... additionally, her sister, Angela, is a member of the UWM squad ... Angela, a redshirt sophomore, is averaging 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in her first season with the Panthers ... she sat out last year after transferring from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
LAST TIME OUT: Senior Afra Smith tied her career high with 20 points as the Falcons posted a 56-52 win at Wright State (Dec. 16) ... the victory marked the Falcons' first road triumph this season ... sophomore Kim Griech chipped in with 12 points, while freshman Lindsay Austin also was in double digits with 11 ... the Falcons, trailing by an early 7-2 count, scored the next eight points and never trailed again ... BG led by as many as 13, but the Raiders got as close as two points in the late going ... Smith drained a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left to seal the victory ... BGSU held WSU to a field-goal percentage of just .303 ... Reggen Stewart's 20 points and 10 rebounds paced the hosts.
LUCKY 700: The Wright State game marked the 700th varsity contest in the history of the Falcon women's basketball program ... BGSU currently has an all-time record of 427-273, good for a winning percentage of .610.
DEFENSE! The Falcons held Wright State to just 52 points and a field-goal percentage of .303 ... the point total represented the second lowest allowed by the Falcons in the Dee Knoblauch Era (50 vs. Northern Illinois on Feb. 7, 2000) ... likewise, the field-goal percentage, which marked BG's best defensive effort since Akron hit just .300 on Feb. 26, 1999, was the second-lowest output for a Falcon opponent in Knoblauch's tenure ... BGSU had not held an opponent under 73 points this year prior to the Wright State contest.
DEFENSE! PART TWO: The Falcons held Wright State without a point for a span of 8:22 in the second half ... after WSU scored with 12:12 left, cutting BG's lead to 45-40, the Falcons would not let the Raiders score again until the 3:50 mark.
DEFENSE! PART THREE: The Falcons had not held an opponent to fewer than 32 points in a half all year, through the first nine games ... BGSU allowed Wright State just 24 points in the first 20 minutes, though, then held WSU to 28 in the second half.
60 ON "D" IS KEY: Not surprisingly, BGSU has been quite successful when limiting the opposition to 60 points or less over the years ... the Falcons held Wright State to just 52 points (Dec. 16), the first time BG had kept the opponent under 60 markers this season ... the Falcons have won 20 consecutive games when holding the opposition under 60 points ... since 1991-92, the Brown and Orange is 44-3 when holding foes to 60 points or less.
SHORTHANDED: The Falcons have played each of the last five games without three starters ... junior Francine Miller and seniors Jackie Adlington and Angie Farmer missed the games due to injuries ... prior to that time, Miller had played in all 60 games since coming to BGSU, while Farmer had seen action in 51 consecutive contests ... BG has gone 2-3 with the three starters out.
INJURY REPORT: Junior Francine Miller suffered an injury to her right meniscus early in the first half of the Detroit game (Dec. 2) ... Miller has missed the last five games, but likely will return to action at UWM ... senior guard Angie Farmer, the team's second-leading scorer (behind Miller), has been hobbled with a stress fracture in her foot for the past several weeks ... she has also missed five contests ... senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the season-opening win over Youngstown State ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot ... it is anticipated that Farmer will be available for the Akron game, while Adlington should be available sometime in early January.
BLOCK PARTY: After blocking a total of 39 shots (1.39 per game) last year, the Falcons already have blocked 31 shots this year ... BGSU is averaging 3.10 blocks per game.
BLOCK PARTY II: Junior Dana Western entered the season with a career total of eight blocked shots ... through 10 games this year, she already has a total of 11 rejections to her credit.
AULT LEAVES TEAM: Freshman Andrea Ault has left the team for personal reasons ... Ault had not seen any game action for the Falcons, either during exhibition play or in the regular season, prior to leaving.
YOUNGSTERS: The Falcon roster now boasts 14 players, but just 11 have suited up for the last few games ... those 11 include one senior, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of nine different players have made at least one start ... only two players, freshman Lindsay Austin and senior Afra Smith, have started all 10 games this year.
66 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 66 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the first of her career ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through 10 games this season, the Falcons are averaging 6.90 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game but one this season.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking charity tosses at a .729 clip (145-of-199) ... BGSU shot .769 or better from the free-throw line in each of the first five games this year, shooting .803 (106-of-132) during that time ... the Falcons are making 14.5 free throws per game this year after averaging 12.1 last winter.
THE TREYS KEEP COMING: The Falcons, despite playing without two players (Angie Farmer and Francine Miller) ranked second and third, respectively, in career three-point field-goal percentage, still were deadly from behind the arc in the first week of the two players' absence ... BGSU averaged 7.33 treys per game that week and shot .449 (22-of-49) from long range ... the main perpetrators were junior Dana Western (.591, 8-of-14) and sophomore Kim Griech (.500, 9-of-18) ... with their success from long range this season, both Western and Griech are also among the BGSU career top-10 in three-point accuracy ... in all, the Falcons are 29 of 70 (.414) in the last five games, averaging 5.80 treys per game during that time.
TRIPLE YOUR PLEASURE, TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.428, 121-of-283), while junior Francine Miller is third (.411, 81-of-197) ... sophomore Kim Griech has moved up to fourth on that list (.402, 45-of-112), while junior Dana Western is in 10th place (.352, 38-of-108) ... Farmer is second with 283 career three-point attempts, while Miller is seventh with 197 triple tries.
