BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three members of the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team have been named to the 2000 All-Ohio Division I/II Women's Soccer Team. Junior Beth Wechsler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was named to the first team, while senior Ashley Enser (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) earned all-state second-team honors and sophomore Jill Conover (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) was selected to the third team.
Wechsler was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team as well as to the league's all-tournament team this past fall. She played in 20 of BGSU's 21 matches, starting them all, and had six points on the year. Wechsler scored goals against both Toledo and Northern Illinois, and added assists vs. Detroit and Marshall, with the latter coming on the match-winning score. She has earned All-Ohio honors in every year of her Falcon career, having garnered third-team laurels in 1999 after being named to the second team in 1998.
Ashley Enser, a team tri-captain, was also an All-MAC Second-Team selection. She played in 19 matches, starting each one. Enser missed the final two matches of the season due to a concussion suffered in the league tourney quarterfinal win at Eastern Michigan. She had started every match in the history of the program (76) to that point. Despite missing the last two contests, she tied for third on the team with 11 points. Enser scored goals vs. Detroit and Miami during the regular season, as well as in that EMU tourney match. She had five assists (coming against UDM, Bucknell, Central Michigan, Ball State and UW-Green Bay) to rank third on the team in that department. Enser earns all-state honors for the second time, having garnered honorable mention in 1997.
Conover led the Falcons in scoring for the second-straight season, with 21 points. She had a team-high six goals and nine assists, with the latter total breaking her own seasonal record. Conover played in 20 matches, starting 19, and had four-point matches (goal and two assists) against both Central Michigan and UW-Green Bay. She had a goal and an assist in the Bucknell match, as well as in the MAC Tournament win at EMU. Conover also scored vs. Detroit and Marshall, and assisted against Toledo, EMU (regular-season match) and Kent State. She broke her leg in the closing seconds of the MAC tourney semifinal, and missed the championship match.
The Falcons posted an overall record of 10-10-1 in 2000, and had a MAC mark of 5-5-1. BGSU, seeded seventh for the MAC Tournament, advanced all the way to the championship match before dropping a 1-0 double-overtime decision to Miami University.
The Falcons were the only MAC team other than Miami to have an All-Ohio First-Team pick. Overall, Miami led the state's MAC schools with five selections, followed by BGSU's three, Toledo with two and both Kent State and Ohio with one.
