THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to return to winning ways while battling a rash of injuries, will play the first of three games away from home this week. The Falcons (2-3) will head to New York to take on St. Bonaventure University in a Tuesday (Dec. 5) contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at SBU's Reilly Center (6,000).
Following the SBU game, the Falcons will leave BG Thursday morning for a pair of games in Tucson, Ariz., this weekend. The Brown and Orange will play in the Arizona Basketball Classic, opening against host Arizona Friday (Dec. 8). Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. Eastern). On Saturday (Dec. 9), the Falcons will face Fresno State in a 4:00 p.m. start (6:00 p.m. ET).
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 26-34. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 208-153 (.576). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 2-3 record on the young season, after dropping a home contest to Detroit, 94-75, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2). The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. In that game, four of the Falcons' five starters hit double digits in the scoring department.
Three days later (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. BGSU then split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic (Nov. 24-25), topping Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count, but losing to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, in the championship contest.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and likely will miss the St. Bonaventure contest.
Senior Angie Farmer is the only other Falcon averaging in double digits, with 10.2 points per outing. Farmer, however, will miss the SBU game as well due to injury.
Junior Dana Western is third on the squad, with 8.0 points per game off the bench. Freshman Lindsay Austin (7.6 ppg), sophomore Kim Griech (6.5 ppg), senior Afra Smith and redshirt freshman Pam Brown (6.2 ppg each) are close behind.
Brown (6.0 rpg) currently leads the team in rebounding, followed by Miller (5.8 rpg), freshman Kelly Kapferer (4.2 rpg) and Western (4.0 rpg). Austin leads the team with 3.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.8 assists to date.

The Falcons are shooting .803 from the free-throw line, having made 106 charity tosses in 132 attempts through five games. The Falcons are shooting .381 from three-point range and averaging an even 8.0 triples per game, while the foes are shooting .264 from behind the arc.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING SBU: St. Bonaventure enters Tuesday's contest with a 1-5 record ... the Bonnies have won the team's only home game to date, a 93-84 decision vs. Canisius (Nov. 28) ... four of SBU's losses have come on the road, at Cincinnati, Kent State, Colorado State and Miami (Fla.) ... Bona also lost to UNC Wilmington in neutral-site action, at CSU's tournament ... the team's most recent action was Saturday's (Dec. 2) loss at Miami, 71-51 ... senior forward Melissa Fazio leads the team in scoring, with 13.8 points per game ... sophomore Courtney Mattingly (10.3 ppg) and senior Gellaine Clarke (10.2 ppg) also are in double digits, while sophomore guard Trisha Raniewicz is averaging 9.8 points ... THE SERIES: The Falcons and St. Bonaventure have met just once in women's basketball ... that meeting came last year, as the Falcons opened the home portion of the 1999-2000 schedule with a come-from-behind victory, 88-69 (Nov. 22, 1999) ... Francine Miller led the Brown and Orange with 26 points in the victory.
LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons dropped a 94-75 decision to visiting Detroit Saturday (Dec. 2) ... UDM, leading by nine points at the half, used a run early in the second half to pull away from the Brown and Orange ... BGSU struggled from the field, making just one of 14 field-goal attempts over the first 10 minutes of that second half ... for the game, the Falcons were 20-of-62 (32.3%) ... by contrast, UDM shot 59.4% in the first half and 45.8% for the game ... compounding matters for the Falcons was the loss of All-MAC performer Francine Miller, who went down with an injury just six minutes into the game ... the Falcons were led offensively by true freshman Lindsay Austin and redshirt frosh Pam Brown, with 13 points apiece ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
61 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 61 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through five games this season, the Falcons are averaging an even 8.00 three-pointers made per contest.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are doing even better, sinking charity tosses at an .803 clip (106-of-132) ... additionally, the Falcons are making 21.2 free throws per game after averaging 12.1 last year ... BGSU has shot .769 or better from the free-throw line in every game this year.
INJURY REPORT: Junior Francine Miller suffered an injury to her right meniscus early in the first half of the Detroit game ... Miller will miss the St. Bonaventure game, and could be sidelined for several weeks ... senior guard Angie Farmer, the team's second-leading scorer (behind Miller), has been hobbled with tendonitis in her foot for the past several weeks ... she has played in each of the Falcons' games this year, but will miss the SBU contest ... senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the season-opening win over Youngstown State ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot and is expected to be sidelined for the entire non-conference portion of the schedule.
