TUCSON, Ariz. - Host Arizona scored the game's first 10 points en route to a 99-43 defeat of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Friday night (Dec. 8). The game, the opening contest of the Arizona Basketball Classic, was held at the McKale Center.
The Falcons, now 2-5, played with three starters sitting on the bench in street clothes and never really were in the contest. After the UA 10-0 run to start the game, the Falcons pulled within 11 points late in the first half. A pair of free throws by senior Afra Smith cut the Wildcats' lead to 32-21 with 3:40 left in the first half. But, the Wildcats, now 5-1 on the year, scored the next 13 points before a Dana Western basket closed the first-half scoring.
Then, the hosts, receiving votes in both national polls, opened the second stanza by scoring 10 of the first 12 points to take a 30-point lead at 55-25. The hosts kept pulling away, with the final margin the game's largest.
For the Falcons, Western led the way with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. The double-double was the first of the junior's career.
Sophomore Kim Griech had eight points, while Smith added seven. BGSU had eight turnovers in the game's first four minutes en route to 30 for the game.
A total of six Wildcats scored in double digits, led by Elizabeth Pickney's 20 markers. Tysell Bozeman had 16 for the hosts.
The Falcons shot just 26.8 percent for the game, while UA shot 48.8%.
BGSU's 11 players in uniform included one senior, one junior, five sophomores and four freshmen. Francine Miller, Angie Farmer and Jackie Adlington, all of whom started the Falcons' 2000-01 season opener, all sat out the contest with injuries.
The Falcons return to action Saturday (Dec. 9), with a game against Fresno State. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. locally (6:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
