TUCSON, Ariz. - With three starters out with injuries, Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Dee Knoblauch needed some of her other players to step up against Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9). Several Falcons did just that, as BGSU posted an 83-73 win over the Bulldogs at the McKale Center.
The game was the Falcons' second in the Arizona Basketball Classic.
Junior Dana Western hit all four of her first-half shots en route to 12 points at the break, and she finished with a career-high 17 on the afternoon. Western went 6-of-10 from the field, including a 3-of-4 performance from three-point land.
Western was not the only Falcon hot from behind the arc, as sophomore Kim Griech hit a career-best five treys in seven long-range attempts on her way to a career-high 17 points. Griech also set a career mark with six assists, and posted just the second blocked shot of her career.
Another sophomore, Karen Stocz, had the best game of her Falcon tenure, setting career standards in a plethora of categories. Stocz had the first double-digit game of her career, with 11 points, and added career bests of seven rebounds and three steals. She had all 11 of her points and all three thefts in the second half.
Redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just 18 minutes of action, tied her BGSU best with 12 rebounds. She had 11 of those boards in the first half.
The Bulldogs, now 2-4 on the year, scored the first four points of the game, but the Falcons came back quickly. Down, 8-6, BG tied the contest on a basket by sophomore Megan Jerome. That began a 10-0 run which was capped by a pair of Griech treys.
Another big Falcon run gave BG a 19-point lead. The Falcons scored 11-straight points to build a 30-11 margin with 7:22 left in the half. BGSU held the Bulldogs without a basket for a span of 9:39 in that first stanza.
Fresno rallied, however, largely behind Lindsay Logan. The Bulldogs got as close as nine points before settling for a 10-point halftime deficit.
In the second half, the Bulldogs trailed by a 64-50 margin, but rallied with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to just three points. But, Stocz hit back-to-back baskets, with assists from Smith in each case, to give BG a 68-61 lead with seven minutes left. Her second basket came with just one second left on the shot clock.
Fresno got as close as four points on one more occasion, but yet another Stocz basket moved BG back up by six points.
The Falcons put the game away with a Brown layup and a 4-for-4 effort from the free-throw line in the final minute.
For Fresno, Logan scored 27 points, while Tiffany Simon had 17 before fouling out.
BGSU shot 53.3 percent in the first half and 52.5% for the game, while holding Fresno to a 33.3% effort in the first half and a 38.2% mark on the afternoon.
The Falcons went 9-of-14 from three-point range, a success rate of 64.3%.
For the third consecutive game, the Falcons played without starters Francine Miller, Angie Farmer and Jackie Adlington, all of whom are nursing injuries.
Following Sunday's (Dec. 10) game, an Arizona win over Fresno State (92-55), the all-tournament team was announced. Western was BGSU's lone representative, joining Fresno's Logan, and Arizona's Aimee Grzyb, Krista Warren and Elizabeth Pickney. The Wildcats' Reshea Bristol was named the tournament MVP.
BGSU, now 3-5 on the year, will return to Ohio to host the Buckeyes of Ohio State in a Tuesday (Dec. 12) contest. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
