Bowling Green, OH - The Bowling Green State University hockey team recorded its fifth win in its last seven games with a 5-1 victory over visiting Miami University at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The win improves BG's overall record to 12-15 and CCHA mark to 9-12. The RedHawks fall to 12-12-3 overall and 9-9-3 in the CCHA.
Miami's Dustin Whitecotton scored a power-play goal 2:56 into the contest, but Falcon netminder Shawn Timm would not allow another goal the rest of the contest. BG tied the game at one as Austin de Luis scored a power-play goal with 5:40 remaining in the opening period. It only took BG seven seconds to score the equalizer after Jeremy Bautch was whistled off for tripping. Greg Day won the offensive zone draw, and after receiving a pass from Michael Jones, fed a cross-ice pass to de Luis.
Freshman Ryan Fultz put the Falcons in front 2-1 with his 5-on-5 goal 2:16 into the middle period. Ryan Murphy increased BG's lead with his five-on-five goal at the 12:43 mark of the second period. Scott Hewson set up Murphy's seventh of the campaign with a pass from the corner and Murphy's backhand went five hole on Miami goalie David Burleigh. Senior defenseman Michael Jones scored his second goal of the season, and his first since Oct. 23 at Western Michigan, when his blueline blast beat Burleigh with only seven seconds left in the middle stanza.
Jones would connect again on the power play midway through the third period. Both of Jones' man-advantage markers were assisted by Tyler Knight and Grady Moore.
Miami scored on its first power-play chance in the contest, but the BG penalty killers would stop the RedHawks final nine man-advantage opportunities. BG scored on three of its seven power-play chances.
Timm finished the contest with 24 saves, while Miami goalies David Burleigh (11 saves in 40 minutes) and Andy Marsch (three saves in the third period) combined for 14 stops as Miami outshot BG 25-19.
The win was Bowling Green's first against Miami this season (the RedHawks had won the previous two meetings by a combined 11-2). The two teams will conclude their regular-season series on Feb. 12 at Miami's Goggin Ice Arena with face-off slated for 7:05 p.m.
