CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office released the preseason softball poll today (Feb. 10), and the Bowling Green State University squad was picked to finish fourth in the league's East Division. The poll is the result of voting done by the league's 12 head coaches. Voting was done on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, with the first-place team receiving six points, the second-place team receiving five points, etc., in each division.
The Falcons of second-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw received one first-place vote and 38 total points. Defending East Division champion Kent was picked to repeat, while Ohio and Akron were tabbed for second and third, respectively. Central Michigan, last year's MAC Tournament winner, was chosen as the favorite to capture the West Division and win the 2000 MAC Tournament.
The Brown and Orange finished 21-27 overall last year, and placed second in the East Division with a league record of 15-11. A pair of All-MAC performers return for the Falcons in twin sisters Angie Domschot and Jen Domschot. Angie, a junior, earned all-league first-team honors as a shortstop last spring, while Jen, also a junior, was a second-team selection as a right fielder/first baseman.
The Falcons will open the 2000 season at a tournament hosted by Florida International on March 3-5. The Mid-American Conference opener, as well as the home opener, is set for Friday, March 31, vs. Western Michigan.
