BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Eastern Michigan scored the last 22 points of the game to break a close contest wide open and earn a 92-69 victory at Anderson Arena Saturday (Feb. 12). The Eagles tied a Mid-American Conference record by making 16 three-point field goals in the contest.
The Eagles (12-12 overall, 6-7 MAC) broke out to an early 12-2 lead, and never trailed in the first half. EMU led by as many as 17 points, at 40-23, and held a 43-32 edge at the intermission.
BGSU (6-16, 4-8) came out strong in the second half, opening the stanza with a 19-8 run over the first 6:30 to tie the contest. There were four ties and seven lead changes over the next few minutes, and a Kim Griech jumper gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the day, 63-60, with 10 minutes left in the game. Those were the first of eight-straight BG points from the hands of Griech. Unfortunately for the Falcon faithful, those points were the last that BG would score all afternoon.
EMU regained the lead on a pair of free throws from Abby Wiseman and a Stephanie Smiley three- pointer. Both Smiley and Kristy Maska tied the EMU school record by making six treys on the day. With 8:08 remaining, a Griech triple cut the Eastern lead to 67-66. Jessica Henry hit a triple for the Green and White, but another Griech trey made the score 70-69, EMU, with 6:54 left. That set the stage for the Eagles' penultimate 22-0 run.
Another Smiley triple got things started, and a pair of Henry charity tosses gave EMU a six-point lead with six minutes to play. The lead was just eight with three minutes left, but the Falcons could not get anything going on the offensive end. EMU scored eight points from the free-throw line over the last two minutes, before a Kris Kachaturoff jumper closed out the scoring.
The Eagles' 16 triples tied the MAC record that has now been matched three times this year. Prior to the EMU game, the Falcons had been the last team to turn the trick, canning 16 treys vs. Akron on Jan. 26.
The Falcons made 10 three-pointers in the game, led by Angie Farmer's four and Griech's three. Jaymee Wappes had a pair, and Francine Miller had one trey. Through six home MAC games this year, the Falcons are averaging 11.3 three-pointers per game, having drained 68.
On the year, the Falcons continue to lead the nation in three-point field goals made per game, with an average of 9.18 per game. The NCAA record is 9.19, held by the 1993-94 South Carolina team.
The Falcons were perfect in nine tries from the free-throw line, while the Eagles shot 91.7 percent from the stripe, going 22-of-24. From the field, EMU shot .403 to the Falcons' .347. BGSU missed its last eight shots of the game.
Farmer led the Brown and Orange with 14 points, while Griech was in double digits for the second-straight game, with 13 off the bench. Dana Western had nine points, while Miller and Wappes had eight points each. Sherry Kahle had a team-best 10 rebounds, while Wappes dished out a game-high nine assists in her 40 minutes of work.
For the Eagles, Smiley had 26 points and 14 rebounds, both career highs. Maska had 18 points, as five EMU players hit double digits on the day.
The Falcons will try to return to winning ways Tuesday (Feb. 15), when BG continues a season-long, four-game homestand by entertaining Ohio University. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
