BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Angie Farmer scored a game-high 23 points as the Bowling Green women's basketball team recorded a 70-65 victory over visiting Ohio Tuesday night (Feb. 15) in Mid-American Conference play at Anderson Arena. The win gave the Falcons a sweep of the season series between the teams.
Farmer came out like a house afire, scoring the first 11 points of the game. After a layup by OU's Beckie Fischer, Farmer hit a three-pointer, her third of the game, to give BG a 14-2 lead with 16:29 left in the first half. Farmer hit her first six shots, including five from three-point land, to score 17 points in the game's first 7:07. At that point, BG (7-16 overall, 5-8 MAC) led by a 22-5 score.
The Bobcats (10-14, 5-8 MAC) rallied, scoring the next eight points, and the visitors cut the BG lead to six points at the half. In the second half, the lead was four (35-31) when a Francine Miller jumper sparked a 10-0 run to give BG a 45-31 edge. Farmer hit her sixth three-pointer of the game, while Miller capped the run with a trey of her own.
The margin remained at 14 points, 53-39, with just over 12 minutes left when the Bobcats went to work. Over the next six minutes, OU outscored BG, 17-4, to cut the Falcon lead to a single points. Fischer, who tied for team scoring honors with 15 points, scored eight of her markers during the run.
BG's Afra Smith split a pair of free throws at the 5:32 mark, but a Khisha Asubuhi three-pointer gave the Bobcats a 59-58 lead with five minutes left. On the play, BG's Jaymee Wappes suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to leave the game. Kim Griech replaced Wappes, who missed only a minute of action and played 39 minutes in the game.
While Wappes was sitting at the scorer's table, waiting to check back in, Griech hit a three-pointer to give the Falcons the lead for good. After a defensive stop for the Brown and Orange, Miller hit two free throws. Then, with 1:45 remaining, Dana Western hit a big three-pointer to give the hosts a seven-point lead, 66-59. BG was not out of the woods yet, however.
Fischer split a pair of free throws with 1:32 remaining, and Cathy Szall hit her only trey of the night, bringing OU within 66-63 with 54 seconds left. But, the 'Cats would draw no closer.
Miller again drew a foul, and hit both charity tosses with 33 seconds left. Miller joined Farmer in double digits with 17 markers. After a Lori Moorman jumper for the visitors, Miller went back to the line with 18 seconds left. This time, she missed the back end, but the BG lead was four points. After an OU turnover, the team's 27th of the game, Farmer split a pair of free throws to complete the scoring.
Farmer's 23-point total was just one off her career high, which was set in the teams' first 1999-2000 meeting, a 79-74 BGSU win in Athens (Jan. 15, 2000).
In Tuesday's game, Farmer set the BGSU single-season records for three-pointers made (41) and attempted (93) in MAC games only. The old seasonal records of 37 treys made and 89 attempted in conference contests were held by Sara Puthoff.
Farmer added to her BG seasonal records for all games, and now has made 70 triples in 159 attempts on the season.
The Falcons entered the game with an average of 9.18 three-pointers made per game, a figure that leads the nation. BG went 12-of-26 against the Bobcats to increase the seasonal average to 9.30. The current NCAA record is 9.19, set by South Carolina during the 1993-94 season.
In MAC games this year, the Falcons have made 10.15 treys per contest, with 132 in 13 MAC outings. In seven conference home games, the Brown and Orange average a whopping 11.43 threes. BGSU is shooting .471 from long range.
Heather Laughlin matched Fischer's 15-point total for the visitors, adding a team-best eight rebounds. Moorman added 14 points and a team-best five assists for the Bobcats.
For the Falcons, Sherry Kahle had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. She added five assists and three steals. Wappes had seven markers and five assists, while Miller dished out a game-best six helpers.
The Bobcats went 22-of-31 from the foul line, while the Falcons were 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.
BGSU made 12 three-pointers and 11 two-point shots on the night. The Falcons shot 41.1 percent from the floor, while holding OU to a 35.2 success rate.
The Falcons complete the home portion of the regular season Saturday (Feb. 19), facing Miami University in a 1:00 p.m. start. Senior co-captains Kahle and Wappes will be recognized in ceremonies at the contest. The game will be the first half of a basketball doubleheader at Anderson Arena, with the Falcon men taking on Eastern Michigan University in a game scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff.
