DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her second season at her alma mater, and has a record of 19-30. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 13th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 201-149 (.574). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU brings a 6-16 overall record into the week, and the Falcons are 4-8 in MAC play heading into the OU game. The Brown and Orange defeated Northern Illinois by an 86-50 count Monday (Feb. 7), the team's most decisive victory in over five years, before losing to Eastern Michigan, 92-69, Saturday (Feb. 12).
The Falcons are 3-5 at home, 2-8 on the road and 1-3 in neutral-site contests.
Sophomore forward Francine Miller leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 16.8 points and 7.3 boards per game. She is shooting .467 from the field, .838 from the free-throw line and .446 from three-point range, leading the team in all three categories. Miller ranks second on the Falcons in both assists (2.2 apg) and steals (1.5 spg).
Junior guard Angie Farmer is second on the team with 12.5 points per game. Farmer has started 14 games, including the last 13, and she leads the Falcons in three-pointers made, with a school-record 64. Farmer is shooting .442 from the floor, .430 from long range and .824 from the free-throw line to place second on the team in each category.
Senior forward Sherry Kahle is third on the team in scoring (9.4) and second in rebounding (7.0).
Junior forward Afra Smith and senior point guard Jaymee Wappes round out the team's top-five in scoring with 8.5 and 6.9 points, respectively. Wappes leads BG in assists (6.1 apg) and steals (1.9 spg).
Sophomore center Dana Western is BG's top scorer off the bench, averaging 6.9 points, while freshman guard Kim Griech has 5.6 points per game, including a pair of double-digit efforts last week.
Kahle, Miller, Smith and Wappes have started all 22 games this year.
BG ended the 1998-99 campaign with a 13-14 overall record, and the Falcons finished third in the MAC's East Division with a 9-7 league slate. BG earned the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU is shooting .413 from the field this year, while the opponents are shooting .420. The Falcons are scoring 72.6 points per contest, but allowing 79.8. BGSU is averaging 36.5 boards per game to the opponents' 43.6. The Falcons have shot .369 from three-point land, making a school-record 202 treys in a school-record 547 attempts. BGSU led the nation with 9.14 three-pointers made per game as of Tuesday morning (Feb. 8), and that figure stands at 9.18 treys per game heading into the OU contest.

SCOUTING OHIO: Ohio brings a 10-13 overall record into the week, and the Bobcats check into tomorrow night's game with a 5-7 ledger in MAC play. Last week, the team recorded a pair of wins, 87-68 over Miami Tuesday (Feb. 8) and 79-68 at Marshall Saturday (Feb. 12). Individually, sophomore guards Jacquie Negrelli and Cathy Szall lead the team in scoring, with 15.2 and 11.7 points per game, respectively. Negrelli also paces the Bobcats in assists, with 4.8 per outing. Junior guard Heather Laughlin and sophomore forward Lori Moorman each score 9.6 points per game, and Moorman leads the team with 6.0 rebounds. Laughlin has a team-high 57 steals (2.5 spg). Last year, OU went 4-22 overall and 2-14 in MAC play. Head coach Lynn Bria, in her first year at the school, is 86-103 in her seventh year as a collegiate head coach.
SCOUTING MIAMI: Miami enters the week's action with an overall record of 13-8, and the RedHawks take a 7-4 MAC slate into tonight's home game vs. Western Michigan. MU plays at Kent Thursday before heading to BG for Saturday's game. Last week, the RedHawks played just once, losing at OU to break a four-game win streak. Junior guard Jenny Martin leads the RedHawks with 13.3 points per game, including 15.4 in MAC action, while freshman guard Heather Cusick averages 10.8 points and team-best averages of 5.1 assists and 2.2 steals. Another guard, senior Jamie Stewart, averages 10.5 points, while senior center AuBree Hamilton has 9.6 points and a team-best 9.4 rebounds. Senior forward Lindsay Winkler rounds out the probable starting five. A year ago, MU went 11-15 overall and 7-9 in MAC action. Linda Fantanarosa, 24-23 in her second year at her alma mater, is 31-43 in her third year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 2-1), and BGSU holds advantages of 30-16 over Ohio and 28-18 vs. Miami.
The Falcons are 18-4 in home games vs. OU, and have won the last four meetings in Anderson Arena, including a 97-89 win last Jan. 20. BG has captured the last two overall meetings, including a 79-74 win in Athens last month (Jan. 15). Six of the last seven series meetings have been decided by single digits.
BGSU is 13-8 all-time in home games vs. MU, and BG has won the last two games in Anderson, including a 69-59 win two years ago in the last home meeting (Feb. 25, 1998). The Falcons had a four-game overall winning streak broken in a big way by the RedHawks last month (Jan. 22), as host MU hung a 100-69 decision on the Brown and Orange. Prior to that, BG had won three-straight 10-point games vs. Miami.
LAST WEEK: The Falcons shot .556 from three-point range and forced 31 turnovers en route to an 86-50 win over visiting Northern Illinois Monday (Feb. 7) ... BGSU's total of 15 three-point baskets was just one shy of the school record, set in the last home game ... NIU, despite dressing just eight players due to injuries and illness, hung with BG for the first six minutes ... the visitors led, 13-12, before a Dana Western jumper gave the Falcons the lead for good ... that shot ignited a 22-5 run over the next 10 minutes, and the Falcons led, 37-24, at the half ... BG forced 19 NIU turnovers in the first 20 minutes ... in the second half, the Falcon lead was 10 points, before a Megan Jerome layup off a Kim Griech inbounds pass sparked a 22-2 run ... the Falcons blistered the nets for a 9-of-14 three-point performance in the second half and a 15-of-27 effort for the game ... Francine Miller had a team-high 17 points to pace four Falcons in double digits ... she tied her career best with five steals ... Jaymee Wappes and Griech each had career-high scoring totals, with 16 and 15 points, respectively ... both Wappes and Griech went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc ... Afra Smith had 11 points ... the Falcons shot .500 for the game, and held NIU to a .396 effort ... BG had not held an opponent to less than 69 points all year ... Charbea Haller led NIU with 17 points, while Michelle Johnson had 12 points and 16 rebounds ... on Saturday (Feb. 12), Eastern Michigan broke open a tight game en route to a 92-69 win at Anderson ... the visiting Eagles scored the last 22 points of the game ... EMU broke out to an early 12-2 lead, and led by as many as 17 points in the first half ... BG trailed by 11 at the break, then opened the second half with a 19-8 run to tie the contest ... there were four ties and seven lead changes over the next few minutes, and a Griech jumper gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the day, 63-60, with 10 minutes left ... those were the first of eight-straight points from Griech ... she hit a pair of three-pointers, the second of which brought BG within 70-69 with 6:54 left ... the Falcons would not score again, however ... EMU tied the MAC record with 16 three-pointers in the game ... BGSU made four treys in the contest ... Angie Farmer led the Brown and Orange with four triples and 14 points, while Griech added 13 markers ... the Falcons were perfect in nine tries from the free-throw line ... Stephanie Smiley led EMU with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The NCAA released the latest women's basketball statistics last Tuesday (Feb. 8), and the Falcons were listed in several categories ... individually, junior Angie Farmer was ranked among the national leaders in three-point field-goals per game ... Farmer was tied for 13th with a 2.9 average ... as a team, the Falcons continued to lead the nation in three-pointers made per game, with 9.14, and BG was tied for eighth in free-throw pct. (.754) ... after the EMU game, Farmer is still averaging 2.9 treys, while the Falcons are now draining 9.18 triples per game and shooting .761 from the charity stripe ... the next NCAA stats are scheduled to be released late Tuesday (Feb. 15) or early Wednesday (Feb. 16).
WEARY WAPPES: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes leads the Falcons with an average of 35.3 minutes played per game ... over the last 15 contests, Wappes has played 564 of the 600 minutes, an average of 37.6 per game ... Wappes has played all 40 minutes five times during that stretch ... during that time, she has dished out 103 assists (6.9 apg) while committing 61 turnovers ... she also has had 125 points, an average of 8.3 per game ... in the 100th game of her Falcon tenure, Wappes had a career-high 16 points vs. Northern Illinois.
YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, MA'AM: With at least five games remaining in the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons already have shattered the school seasonal records for three-point shots attempted and made ... the "old" records, set just last year, were 135 treys made in 400 attempts ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the BG school records were 97 triples made and 296 attempted, set by the 1994-95 squad ... this year, through 22 games, BGSU has attempted 547 treys, making 202 ... that is an average of 9.18 three-pointers made and 24.9 attempted per game ... those numbers project to 248 successful "threes" in 671 attempts over a 27-game schedule ... currently, the MAC record for successful "threes" in a season is 234, set by the 1993-94 teams at both Kent (28 games) and Toledo (32 games) ... the NCAA record for three-pointers in a season is 289, set by Colorado State (in 36 games) last year.
THEY'RE FIRING AWAY, TOO: Believe it or not, opponents have hoisted a total of 566 shots from behind the arc, an average of 25.7 per game ... BG foes have made 202 treys this year ... the opponents have taken at least 15 three-point shots in all but one game (Kent tried just 13 in the first meeting), and have shot 20 or more treys 14 times ... the foes have taken 41 three-point attempts three times this year.
WAPPES DISHES 'EM OUT: Senior point guard Jaymee Wappes is moving up the BGSU career assists list ... with four assists in the win over Northern Illinois, Wappes moved into fourth place in school annals ... after dishing out nine more vs. EMU, she now has 358 helpers in her career ... her total of 135 this year is 24 more than her total for all of last season ... Wappes, after passing Cathy Koch (347) on the career list, will end her career in fourth place ... Paulette Backstrom is in third place with 559 career assists ... Dee Knoblauch holds the school record, with 673.
BIG WIN: The Falcons' 86-50 win over Northern Illinois (Feb. 7) was the team's largest margin of victory since the 1993-94 home opener ... BGSU's 36-point margin was the most since a 76-38 win over Youngstown State (Dec. 1, 1994) ... in MAC games, the NIU win was the Falcons' most decisive in nearly six years, since a 103-53 win at Akron on Feb. 26, 1994.
ANDER-RIFFIC!: In six home conference games this season, the Falcons have made an average of 11.3 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU is shooting an eye-popping .472 from three-point range in those games, having made 68 treys in 144 attempts ... the Falcons have made at least eight triples in each of those games, and have made 41 in the last three home contests combined.
ANOTHER GAME, ANOTHER RECORD: Against Akron (Jan. 26), BGSU set school single-game records for three-pointers made (16) and attempted (38) ... setting records is nothing new for this year's edition of the Brown and Orange ... in fact, BG's totals broke records that had been set just nine days earlier ... entering the season, the school record for three-point shots made in a game was 12 ... BG has hit double digits in that area nine times this year ... BG's single-game record for three-pointers attempted was 29 heading into the 1999-2000 campaign ... the Falcons have surpassed that total six times.
60 ON "D" IS KEY: Not surprisingly, BGSU has been quite successful when limiting the opposition to 60 points or less over the years ... the Falcons held NIU to just 50 points (Feb. 7), the first time BG had kept the opponent under 60 markers this season ... the Falcons have won 19 consecutive games when holding the opposition under 60 points ... since 1991-92, the Brown and Orange is 43-3 when holding foes to 60 points or less.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: A number of current Falcons already are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... sophomore Francine Miller is currently ranked first on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage, while junior Angie Farmer is third ... senior Jaymee Wappes has moved into seventh on that list ... Farmer is third all-time with her 97 three-pointers made, while Miller is fifth with 71 ... seniors Wappes and Sherry Kahle are close behind with 66 and 65, respectively ... Farmer is fourth all-time with 226 three-point attempts, followed in succession by Kahle (217), Wappes (185) and Miller (162) ... on the single-season lists, Farmer now owns the school records with 64 treys made and 149 attempts this season ... Miller has made 37 treys, good for sixth-most all-time, and is shooting .446 from long range this year ... that pct., if she can maintain it, would set a school seasonal record ... Farmer's .430 pct. would place her fifth on the seasonal list, and freshman Kim Griech would be ninth with her .377 pct. ... the complete lists follow:

STREAK AT 50, AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in each of the last 50 games, a school record ... the last time BGSU was held without a triple was on March 1, 1998, vs. Toledo ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons ... this season, the Falcons have made at least five three-pointers in every game but one.
MILLER A MAINSTAY: Sophomore Francine Miller had a successful freshman campaign last winter, and has blossomed into a bonafide All-MAC candidate as a sophomore ... heading into the week, Miller is averaging 16.8 points per game ... in league play, she is averaging 17.1 points per contest ... she tied the school record with 35 points in the second Kent meeting ... over the last 11 games, Miller has averaged 18.3 points per contest ... that average includes efforts of 29 points vs. Akron and 28 at Central Michigan ... the school record of 35 points was originally set by Jackie Motycka (Dec. 12, 1987, vs. Washington State) ... that mark was tied by Jacki Raterman (Feb. 9, 1999, vs. Ball State) last year.
FALCON NOTES: The Eastern Michigan game marked the 350th contest of Dee Knoblauch's head-coaching career ... she began her collegiate coaching tenure as a graduate assistant at EMU during the 1986-87 season. ... senior co-captain Jaymee Wappes played in her 100th career game when the Falcons beat NIU Monday ... Wappes made the 62nd start of her career that evening ... four of the NCAA's top five three-point totals of the season, and five of the top eight, have come in games involving Bowling Green ... the Falcons were the victim on three occasions, as Ole Miss made 17 treys against the Brown and Orange (Nov. 26), while Miami (Jan. 22) and Eastern Michigan (Feb. 12) hit 16 ... BGSU made 16 against Akron (Jan. 26) and 15 vs. NIU (Feb. 7) ... in that Ole Miss game, the Falcons and Lady Rebels combined to make 31 three-point field goals in 75 attempts ... both totals set new NCAA Division I records for two teams in a game ... BGSU has made at least five three-pointers in every game but one this winter ... freshman Kim Griech had the two highest-scoring games of her young career last week, with 15 points vs. NIU and 13 against EMU ... senior Sherry Kahle has played in all 106 games since her arrival on the BGSU campus in the fall of 1996 ... she has started 78 contests in her career, including the last 49 games ... Kahle is BG's top active scorer with 822 points ... Kahle has worn a protective mask in each of the last 11 games ... she donned the clear mask after suffering a black eye and a bruised cheekbone in the Washington State game, and having the injury reaggravated several times thereafter ... junior Angie Farmer has hit at least one three-pointer in the last 16 games, and in 20 of this year's 22 contests.
