CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman McKenna Houle fired a complete-game three-hitter as the Bowling Green softball team recorded a 5-0 win over Pittsburgh Friday (March 24). The game was BG's first in the Hoo's Who Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia.
The complete game was the first of Houle's career, and improved her record to 4-1 on the season. The Falcons are now 11-4 and off to the best start in school history.
BGSU wasted no time getting on the board, with a pair of runs in the first inning. Junior second baseman Angie Domschot led off the game with a triple to left-center field, her first of two three-baggers in the contest. One out later, senior third baseman Erin Zwinck singled to plate Domschot. After another out, junior leftfielder Jenny Domschot matched her sister with a triple which scored Zwinck.
BG completed the scoring with three runs in the fourth. Junior first baseman Nikki Rouhana singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. One out later, sophomore catcher Holly Frantz singled to send Rouhana to third, and Frantz took second on a Panther error. Rouhana scored on a passed ball, and Angie Domschot followed with her second triple, scoring Frantz. Domschot scored her second run of the game on another Pitt passed ball.
Houle, who faced four batters over the minimum, did not allow a runner past second base. Both Pitt (now 9-12 overall) and BGSU left four runners on base in the game. She walked two batters and fanned five to improve her earned-run average to 0.58 on the season.
At the plate, Frantz joined Angie Domschot with two hits.
BGSU returns to the field later Friday afternoon to face host Virginia. The Cavaliers are coached by Cheryl Sprangel, who was the collegiate coach of Falcon mentor Leigh Ross-Shaw at Toledo.
