CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Jessie Milosek threw a complete-game five-hitter as the Bowling Green softball team posted a 3-0 shutout over host Virginia. The game was the Falcons' second in the Hoo's Who Tournament, hosted by UVa.
With the win, BGSU improved to 12-4 on the season. The record marks BG's best-ever start to a season.
Milosek, who improved to 4-1 with the win, threw her second complete-game shutout of the year. BGSU now has seven shutout wins in 16 games this spring.
The Falcons, who outhit the Cavaliers, 6-5, scored all of the game's runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior third baseman Lynsey Ebel led off with an infield single, and was replaced by junior pinch-runner Morgan LaNicca. Freshman shortstop Libby Voshell, who had two hits in the game, doubled to left field to plate LaNicca. Another freshman, Kandice Machain sacrificed, with still another frosh, pinch-runner Jessica Jenkins, advancing to third.
Junior second baseman Angie Domschot followed with a run-scoring single to score Jenkins. The hit was the third of the day for Domschot, who tripled twice in BG's earlier win over Pittsburgh. Domschot was retired on a grounder by senior centerfielder Carmen Hitterdal, but junior Jenny Domschot walked, and senior catcher Colleen Bates reached on an error. On that play, Hitterdal scored the game's final run.
The win gave Falcon coach Leigh Ross-Shaw a victory over her former collegiate mentor. Ross-Shaw, an All-American at Toledo under Cheryl Sprangel, found herself in the opposite dugout, as Sprangel is in her third year with the Wahoos.
Milosek, who improved her earned-run average to 0.93 with the win, allowed a runner as far as third base on just two occasions in the game. She walked just one batter and struck out three.
With the loss, Virginia dropped to 11-23 on the season.
BGSU completes play in the Hoo's Who Tournament with a pair of games on Saturday (March 25). The Brown and Orange will face Rutgers and Penn State before returning home.
