UP NEXT: The Bowling Green State University softball team will continue play in the state of Florida this week. BGSU, after opening the 2000 season with six games at the Golden Panther Invitational last weekend, now will play a series of neutral-site contests this week before a road twinbill Saturday (March 11).
The Falcons (3-3) will face Buffalo and North Carolina A&T Tuesday (March 7), with both contests held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. On Wednesday (March 8), the Falcons will take on Boston University, with Tampa serving as the site.
BGSU heads back to Orlando for a Friday (March 10) twinbill vs. arch-rival Toledo in the morning, and a single game vs. Buffalo that night. On Saturday, the Brown and Orange will play a pair of games vs. host Stetson in DeLand, Fla.
THE RECORDS: BGSU is 3-3 overall after winning the final three games of the Golden Panther Invitational. The Falcons started at 0-3, with losses to Eastern Michigan (6-3), host Florida International (4-2) and Wichita State (3-0), before rebounding for wins against Robert Morris (2-0 in nine innings), Florida A&M (7-2) and Ohio State (2-0). Sophomore pitcher Andrea Genter hurled a complete-game one-hitter against the Buckeyes.
The Falcons ended the 1999 season with a 21-27 record. BGSU qualified for the MAC Tournament for the second consecutive year.
The Falcons finished MAC action with a 15-11 league mark, good for second place in the East Division. BG, after beginning the league slate with a 4-7 record, won 11 of the final 15 MAC contests.
Buffalo started the 2000 season with a 2-2 record. The Bulls have reinstated the sport of softball this year after a 13-year absence.
No information on North Carolina A&T was available at press time.
Boston University enters the week with a 3-4 record. Last spring, the Terriers went 28-15 overall and 7-7 in the America East Conference to tie for fourth place.
Toledo is 0-1 after a Sunday (March 5) loss to Villanova. The Rockets were 17-37 overall, and 7-21 in the MAC, last year.
Stetson has already played 23 games in 2000, and the Hatters are 14-9 entering the week's action. A year ago, SU went 24-33 overall and 5-7 in the Trans America Athletic Conference.
THE COACHES: BGSU's Leigh Ross-Shaw is in her second season as a collegiate head coach. She assumed the top job after two years as BG's assistant coach. The Ottawa Lake, Mich., native came to the Falcon program in 1996 after serving as the head coach at Notre Dame Academy for four seasons. Ross-Shaw, a 1992 graduate of the University of Toledo, still holds numerous UT and MAC records, and remains the all-time conference leader in batting average (.398), at-bats and hits. She set a MAC record by hitting .447 as a senior en route to All-America Second-Team honors.
Amy Kyler is in her second season as Ross-Shaw's assistant. Kyler, quite possibly the top pitcher in Cleveland State history, graduated from CSU in 1997. She played professionally with the Carolina Diamonds of the Women's Pro Softball League for two years before joining the expansion Akron Racers for the 1999 campaign. Bobbie Molyneux is in her first year as a volunteer assistant with the Falcon softball squad.
Buffalo's Marie Curran, a former assistant coach at Northern Illinois, is in her first year as a head coach.
Boston University coach Deb Solfaro is 153-81 in her sixth year, all with BU.
First-year Toledo head coach Michelle Fagnant is in her fifth year overall, and has a record of 107-66.
Stetson's Frank Griffin is 95-87 in his fourth year at the school and 327-175 in his 11th season overall.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with both Toledo and Stetson. The Brown and Orange is 33-31 all-time vs. UT, including a sweep of last year's meetings. The Falcons recorded a pair of shutouts, 4-0 and 9-0, at the BGSU Softball Field on May 1. BG has won five-of-seven games in the series since a Rocket six-game win streak.
The Falcons are 6-1 in the Stetson series, and have won the last five meetings. The Brown and Orange swept four games in DeLand in 1992, the last time the teams met on the diamond.
The Falcons have never met Boston University, Buffalo or North Carolina A&T in softball.
MILLENNIUM FALCONS: The Bowling Green softball program has played a total of 995 games in 22-plus seasons ... barring rainouts or last-minute additions, the second game of Friday's (March 10) doubleheader vs. Toledo will be the 1,000th game in school history ... currently, the Falcons have an all-time winning percentage of .465 (459-528-8).
LAST WEEK: The Falcons went 3-3 at the Golden Panther Invitational, hosted by Florida International in Miami.
Eastern Michigan 6, BGSU 3: On Friday (March 3), BG opened the season with a 6-3 loss to MAC foe Eastern Michigan ... the Falcons got a pair of runs in the top of the third, but a five-run Eagle fourth put the "home" team ahead to stay ... sophomore Jessie Milosek took the loss for the Falcons, who were outhit by a 7-5 margin ... senior Erin Zwinck had a pair of hits in four at-bats ... Zwinck had a double and a solo homer, and drove in all three BG runs ... freshman Libby Voshell also had a double in the contest.
Florida International 4, BGSU 2: The Falcons fell to the host school in Friday action ... sophomore Andrea Genter was the BG pitcher of record in her first collegiate starting assignment ... junior Jenny Domschot was 2-of-3 in the game, with a homer and both BG RBI ... Erin Zwinck had a triple ... each team had six hits in the contest.
Wichita State 3, BGSU 0: The Brown and Orange, despite outhitting the Shockers, fell to 0-3 with a Saturday (March 4) shutout loss ... BGSU had an 8-6 advantage in the hits department, but stranded 10 runners on base ... freshman pitcher McKenna Houle suffered the loss in her collegiate debut ... Erin Zwinck again paced the Falcons, with a pair of hits in three trips.
BGSU 2, Robert Morris 0 (9 innings): The Brown and Orange got on the winning track vs. RMC, with an extra-inning triumph Saturday ... after eight scoreless innings, senior Colleen Bates led off the top of the ninth with a stolen base ... Bates, who started the inning at second base by virtue of the international tiebreaker rule, promptly swiped third ... junior Lynsey Ebel reached on an error, with Bates holding third ... junior Morgan LaNicca pinch-ran for Ebel and immediately stole second base ... with runners on second and third, Erin Zwinck came to bat ... she laced a double to score both runners ... Jessie Milosek earned the victory, and the Falcons outhit RMC, 5-4.
BGSU 7, Florida A&M 2: The Falcons opened consolation-bracket play in the FIU tournament with a Sunday (March 5) win ... Jessie Milosek earned her second-straight win, surrendering five hits ... at the plate, freshman Libby Voshell went 2-for-3 with three RBI ... she slammed her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot ... Jenny Domschot was also 2-of-3 and drove in a run, while Colleen Bates had a pair of hits, including a triple, in four at-bats ... Bates had two RBI.
BGSU 2, Ohio State 0: Andrea Genter's second collegiate start proved to be a good one ... Genter threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out seven Buckeye batters ... BG scored both runs in the second inning ... after a Colleen Bates single, Jenny Domschot sacrificed her to second ... junior Nikki Rouhana had a single, and Lynsey Ebel followed with a single to score Bates ... sophomore Holly Frantz followed with a base hit to plate Rouhana ... BG had five hits in the contest.
ROUND-TRIPPIN': Entering the 1999 season, the BGSU single-season record for homers was eight ... last year's edition of the Falcons obliterated that mark by hitting 19 round-trippers ... in fact, the 1999 team had eight homers in one eight-game span ... through six games this year, BG has already homered three times, with senior Erin Zwinck, junior Jenny Domschot and freshman Libby Voshell doing the damage.
